Rowing @ Head of the Charles Regatta (Away)
Tied
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The McGill University rowing crew claimed their first women's medal in 22 years at the 48th annual Head of the Charles regatta, Saturday.
The McGill heavyweight coxed four won a "subsidiary" medal after finishing fourth of 46 entries in the club fours category at the event, which is held on the banks of the Charles River and bills itself as the world's largest annual two-day rowing event, attracting a field of more than 9,000 rowers and over 300,000 spectators every year.
A boat entered under the name TBC Racing took the race in a gold medal time of 19 minutes, 16.703 seconds. Rounding out the top five was Boston University (19:17.091), followed by the New York Athletic Club (19:17.603), McGill (19:23.004) and the University of Connecticut (19:30.931).
It was the best result by a McGill women's crew at the HOTC since back-to-back-to back third-place finishes in 1990, 1989 and 1988. The number of medals awarded depends upon how many boats are entered in a race. In a field of 40 or more, the winning crew is awarded gold, while the next four finishers receive subsidiary medals. There are no silver or bronze medals offered.
McGill's crew was composed of Kalyna Franko, a psychology senior from Toronto, Luce Bourbeau, a political science sophomore from the Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Que., Mira Anand, an environmental science junior from Dundas, Ont., and Ronalee Gutland, a senior in anatomy and cell biology who hails from Woodstock, Ont. The coxswain was Kathryn Jones, a nursing sophomore from Toronto.
McGill had four other boats entered in different races, including an alumni coxed eight which finished 39th of 44 competitors on Saturday. On Sunday, the Redmen finished seventh of 37 boats in the coxed heavyweight eight and last in the coxed lightweight eight. The Martlets lightweight coxed four was 14th of 16 entries.
The McGill men's heavy eight, which was clocked in 16:08.54, was composed of Lucas de Gelder of Vancouver, B.C., Amédée d'Aboville of McLean, Va., Tom Portsmouth of France, Liam Kirwin of Edmonton, Ford Donovan of Thornhill, Ont., Alex Langslow of China, Mark Abraao-York of Toronto, Philippe Toren of Montreal and coxswain Colin Cheng of Vancouver.
The HOTC regatta is considered to be a coxie's race, given the complex course layout. Races are won based on the coxie's performance in guiding the boat along a 3.2 mile course that stretches from the start at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse near the Charles River Basin to the finish just after the Eliot Bridge and before Northeastern University's Henderson Boathouse.
The last top five finish by a McGill men's boat was at the 2010 HOTC when the lightweight four came in third of 19 entries. The last gold medal performance by any McGill boat in this prestigious regatta was the men's coxed four in 2009, which marked McGill's first gold medal since 1995, when the Redmen won their fourth gold in as many years.
Up next for the McGill crew are the OUA championships in St. Catharines, Ont., Oct. 26-27, followed by the Canadian university rowing championships in Burnaby, B.C., Nov. 3-5.
