Freshman Sylla leads Martlets to first hoops win

LONDON, Ont. -- Freshman Mariam Sylla tallied a team-high 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the McGill women's basketball team waltzed to a 75-64 road victory over Western, Saturday.

It was the first win of the preseason for McGill, which improved to 1-2 against CIS opponents and will play at York on Sunday.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward from Guinea, bullied Western's low-post defenders with her length and physicality. She shot 10-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the free-throw line.

The Martlets proved to be the Mustangs' toughest preseason test yet, showing a wide range of shooting ability from the post and beyond the three-point arc.

Teammate Helene Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., contributed 19 points while Francoise Charest of Quebec City added eight. both grabbed five rebounds each.

McGill came out of the tip-off intent on dictating the pace of the game with an aggressive tempo on offence. Western answered the Martlets' speed with their own, led by the athletic play of veteran guard Jenny Vaughan who responded with a game-high 25 points, including 9 in the first half.

Despite the best efforts of the home team in the opening quarter, McGill began to pull away from their competition in the second quarter, at one point leading by 13 points.

The Mustangs were able to cut the Martlets' lead to 6 points at the half for a score of 35 – 29 in favour of McGill, despite being significantly out-rebounded 24 - 13 by the Martlets.

Though the Mustangs forced more turnovers after twenty minutes, the Martlets showed better shot selection than the home team, out-performing Western 46.7% to 37.5% in shooting-percentage. The discrepancy in shooting accuracy would allow McGill to pull away in the second half.

Mustangs head coach Brian Cheng stressed the positives of the exhibition game over the final result.

“Our energy was intermittent. We sometimes had moments of good energy and we had moments where we lacked energy. When we lack energy against a good team, a good team is going to exploit us,” said Cheng.

“I think there is a moral victory there. You saw towards the end of the game that when we are active and working as a team – then we are pretty tough,” in regards to a 16 – 5 Mustangs scoring run to finish the game.

The game may have been epitomized by a play halfway through the third quarter. Handling the ball on the fast break with a victory still in reach for Western, Vaughan drove hard into the body of a McGill defender, drawing the referee's whistle for a charging foul. McGill bent at times to Western's hard-nose play, but never broke in the wake of an excellent game by Vaughan.
