WATERLOO, Ont. - McGill's Helene Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., scored a game-high 17 points but it was insufficient as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team won 69-60 in a preseason affair on Friday night at the Athletic Complex.
The Hawks jumped out to a seven point lead after the first quarter thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Laurier would continue their strong play into the second quarter, finishing the half shooting 46 percent from the floor as they led 33-27 after 20 minutes of play.
A strong defensive effort by the Hawks in the third quarter helped Laurier extend their lead to 14 points after the third quarter and the team rode their strong free throw shooting, finishing 84 percent from the charity stripe, in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.
Rookie guard Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., led Laurier in scoring on the night as she registered 11 points. Bree Chaput of Guelph, Ont., was the Hawks only other player in double-digits, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
McGill plays at Western on Saturday and York on Sunday,
