Lost 1-2 vs Sherbrooke
MONTREAL -- Two mistakes cost the No.6-ranked McGill women's soccer team their first loss of the season, Friday. Sherbrooke rallied with back-to-back markers in a four-minute span and that was enough for a 2-1 road victory at Molson Stadium.
It was the first loss of the season for the Martlets, who dropped to second-place in the Quebec League standings with a 4-1 record.
McGill lost more than the game, however, as starting goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli had to leave the 12th minute of play. The 5-foot-9 sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., was shaken up in a goal-mouth collision and had to be replaced by Shimone Slomowitz, a 5-foot-4 senior from West Vancouver, B.C. Muccilli's status for the next game is unknown.
McGill opened the scoring on a beautiful shot by freshman Alexandria Hoyte of Laval, Que., in the final minute of the opening half. They then controlled the play in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza but Sherbrooke tied the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute. Isabelle Genest connected on a rebound after Slomowitz had made a nice save off Chloe Belhumeur-Limoges on a play that was initiated from a corner kick.
Josee Belanger netted the game-winner four minutes later, taking advantage of a communication breakdown by the McGill defenders. Camille Vandenbergue set up Belanger who sprung free on a breakaway.
"Full credit to Sherbrooke, they defended well after that and even put more players upfront," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "We couldn't generate enough scoring chances and lacked intensity as wll as killer instinct."
McGill had a last-minute scoring chance that was saved on the goal line by a Sherbrooke defender.
"We dominated possession but were not quick enough and lacked the mental focus to play a more offensive-minded style of game when the opportunity presented itself,' added Mounicot.
McGill will have to regroup quickly as they will host the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins in a rare Sunday night affair at Molson Stadium (7 p.m.). The high-powered Carabins are 5-0, with 21 goals for and none against.
"It will be a huge challenge for us but our team will answer the call," predicted the McGill bench boss.
