Banks cashes in his paycheque with hat-trick as soccer Redmen upend Stingers

MONTREAL -- George Banks, a fifth-year senior from Baltimore, Md., scored his first career hat-trick as No. 10-ranked McGill upended Concordia 3-1 in men's soccer before a home-opener crowd of 580 at Molson Stadium, Friday.

It was the fifth straight win for the Redmen over Concordia and extended their undefeated streak between the two rivals to 11-0-4 since the last McGill loss, a 1-0 shutout at Concordia on Oct. 26, 2003.

"It was very nice to see George score three goals," said David Simon, in his third season as head coach of the Redmen. "All three of his goals were scored with his head which is not a surprise because he has a great vertical leap. Last year we moved him up to play at striker and he worked very hard but had trouble finishing. He is much improved this year and I think having a game like he did tonight will give him some confidence. "

Banks put the Redmen ahead in the 27th minute after converting a pass from senior Axel Dovi but less than two minutes later, McGill defender Alex Damianou was carded for tackling Concordia's Alfred moody, resulting in a penalty kick. Karim Haroun, a native of Syria, took the shot and beat McGill 'keeper Matt Gilmour to the left side to knot the score at 1-1.

The Redmen banked on their new-found scoring machine in the second half. Banks tallied an unassisted marker in the 58th minute and only eight minutes later, put the finishing touch on a "double-header" and taking a ball of the head of Dovi.

McGill had a huge territorial edge in the game, with a 23-7 advantage in shots toward net, but had a difficult time converting on their chances and were often thwarted by Stingers goaltender Nicholas Giannone, a junior from Lorraine, Que., who made seven saves.

"Hat's off to their keeper who made some good saves to keep the game close," said Simon. "I'm pleased with the end result but was not happy with our play to start the game. We looked lethargic and nervous in the first half, although it probably had something to do with the fact that it was our home opener and we were playing in front of a good crowd. Once we adapted, we played with more intensity and our superior fitness prevailed."

Gilmour, a six-foot junior from North Vancouver, B.C., was credited with two saves and picked up his second win in s many starts.

McGill, which improved to 2-0, plays at No.3-ranked Laval (2-0) in a match of the titans on Sunday.
