McGill wins 2 -1 on PK against a tough University of Sherbrooke

Martler Soccer vs Sherbrooke (Indoor Semifinal; Away)

Won 2-1 (PK) vs Sherbrooke

The Martlets soccer team will play for the final of the Indoor Provincial Championship in Three Rivers on March 27 against UDM at 1.30 pm.

The team won 2.1 on Pk against a tough and solid University of Sherbrooke soccer team. McGill opened the score on a header of Hannah Simmons and Sherbrooke tied the game on a similar play by Belhumeur in the second half. The Martlets dominated the game in possession but Sherbrooke was dangerous in some counter attacks during the game.

The Vert et Or played physical and stayed well organized for 90 minutes of play, again we should have done better on finishing especially in the second half when we had chances to kill the game, but they never gave up, came back on the score and defended well. We knew that it could finish on Pks and were ready for it making changes in the last 10 minutes to make sure that the shooters were ready for the challenge and focus to the process.

Our only senior Simmons scored on a nice set play on a header and she could have converted 2 other chances and hit the cross bar. Morin-Boucher had also some chances but miss the net two different occasions, her speed was always a threat for the Vert et or defense but  was unlucky tonight.

The game was going back and forth in the last 10 minutes, but our back line played with a lot of composure and was able to win more battles. So, it went to penalty shots and Bahen, Wilson and Colarossi scored on Coulombe but Muccilli stopped the final shot of Vert et or captain Gagne after the first two shooters Turcotte and Vandenberghe hit the target.

It is a important win for us, a step forward in the right direction, undefeated in 9 game so far in the winter 8.0.1 and we will be the underdog against UDM next Sunday. We played this team 3 times this year and all games finished with no winner. UDM won 4.1 versus Laval university earlier today. It will be a nice final, the 2 teams are undefeated this winter and the only meeting finished with a 2.2 tie with goals from Morin-Boucher and Bourque on January 16th. We have a week to prepare for the final and this young team is hungry for a provincial banner.
