KINGSTON, Ont. -- Team captain Holly Millar scored at the four-minute mark on a short corner but McGill had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Queen's, in women's field hockey, Saturday.
From the start McGill dominated, switching the ball and driving down to the baseline and drop inside the circle. Queen's was unable to penetrate McGill's side of the field for the entire fisrt half.
The second half was a repeat performance as McGill continued to pressure the Gaels defence.
However, Queen's began to counter with long passing plays. It finally payed off in the 43rd minute with a breakaway sending a through ball deep into the McGill defensive circle and convered on an action goal that beat goalkeeper Jackie Riddle just beyond the tip of her right pad.
McGill seemed to lose composure for the next 10 minutes before regaining total control of the game.
The Martlets had 10 short corners in the second half (16 in the game) and missed two open nets in the final five minutes.
"That game could be costly for us for a playoff spot as we threw away yet another point to Queen's," said Jean-Pierre Turpain, co-head coach of the Martlets.
McGill sits precariously in the fifth and final playoff berth in the OUA standings with a 2-7-2 record, one point ahead of Waterloo. The Martlets will return to Kingston next week to close out the regular season with games against Carleton (0-1) and Guelph (8-0) on Oct. 16, followed by Western (4-4) and Waterloo (2-4-1) on Oct. 17.
