SHERBROOKE -- Yohann Capolungo scored in the 86th minute as the visiting McGill men's soccer team escaped with a 1-0 victory over Sherbrooke, Sunday.

 

Redmen 'keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin of Deux Montagnes, Que., registered one save to post his second shutout in six starts.

 

Capolungo converted a long volley pass from Thomas Lucas of Kirkland, Que., and fired the ball into the top right corner past goalkeeper Julien Masson-Lefebvre. It was the fourth marker of the season for Capolungo, a native of France who is tied for third in the QUSL goal-scoring race, one goal off the lead.

 

The Redmen dominated from start to finish, with a 15-5 edge in shots toward the net but couldn't solve Sherbrooke Masson-Lefebvre until the dying moments.

 

"Despite a vast number of opportunities to score, especially in the first half, we were holding our breath until the end," said David Simon, in his second season as head coach of the Redmen. "It was an overall team effort but Yohann was once again crucial in being the decisive factor. Also, Lucas played very hard and once again showed that he is a true leader on this team."

 

With five games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen improved to 4-3-0, jumping from fifth to second in the seven-team Quebec league standings.

Laval (7-0-0) leads the division by nine points, followed by McGill (4-3-0), Montreal (3-2-2), UQAM (3-3-1), UQTR (2-3-2), Sherbrooke (1-5-1) and last-place Concordia (1-5-0).

 

Sherbrooke will travels to Concordia on Oct. 15, while the Redmen are off until Oct. 17 when they play in Trois-Rivieres.
