TROIS-RIVIERES - Olivier Babineau of Moncton,
N.B., scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute of play as
visiting McGill blanked the UQTR Patriotes 2-0 in men's university
soccer, Sunday.
Alexander King, a freshman forward from
Detroit, tallied an insurance marker after redirecting a corner
kick by Sami Obaid with three minutes to play.
Jean-Lou Gosselin, a 5-foot-10 keeper from Deux-Montagnes, Que.,
posted the shutout with four saves.
"It was an important win and solid defensive effort," said
McGill head coach David Simon, in his second year
behind the Redmen bench. "We finally have some good momentum going
and hope to keep it for the remainder of the season."
McGill had a decisive 24-6 edge in crosses, an 8-5 advantage on
shots toward the net and a 5-3 difference in corners.
The result extended McGill's win streak to three and moved them
into sole possession of third place in the tightly-packed
seven-team Quebec conference with a 5-3-0 record, one point behind
second-place UQAM (5-3-1) and three ahead of fourth-place Montreal
(3-2-3).
The Redmen have four games remaining before the post-season
begins. They will head to Quebec City on Friday before hosting the
archrival Montreal Carabins on Sunday evening at Molson Stadium
