MONTREAL - A pair of goals by Bianca Cordileone
sparked the No. 2 ranked McGill Martlets to a 4-2 conquest over
Bishop's in Quebec University Soccer League action, Friday. The win
extended McGill's undefeated streak to 8-0-3 overall, including a
7-0-2 mark in league play.
The game was played in six-degree temperatures as rainy, high
winds from a strengthening nor'easter moved into Montreal. A
full-day downpour made the artificial field unplayable at Molson
Stadium and less than two hours before kickoff, a decision was made
to relocate to a Concordia University practice field in the
west-end of the city.
Cordileone, a freshman striker from Laval, Que., scored in the
first minute of the contest to put McGill ahead 1-0 but the Gaiters
responded almost immediately as Taylor Wade of Wolfville, N.S.,
slotted in a cross from Katie Wallace of Stanstead, Que., to tie
the score at 1-1. Cordileone's second marker, in the 24th minute
restored the lead for the division-leading Martlets.
Just three minutes later, junior midfielder Anna
Smith of Somerville, Mass., improved McGill's lead to
3-1.
The Gaiters cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 66th minute when
Allison Verville of Whitby, Ont., scored on a
penalty kick. The Gaiters had their claims for a second penalty
later in the half waved away.
Stephanie Avery, a freshman forward from
Tsawassen, B.C., closed out the scoring with an insurance marker
moments before the final whistle.
Rookie goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli of
Mississauga, Ont., made five saves to pick up the win for McGill.
Becky Yates of Halifax, N.S., was credited with 11
saves in a losing cause and was named as her team's player of the
game. Defender Julia Bahen of Vancouver, B.C.,
earned similar honours for McGill.
Both teams return to action on Sunday afternoon. The Gaiters
(1-7-1) return to Montreal to play the No. 3-ranked Carabins
(7-1-1), while McGill (7-0-2) will travel to UQTR (0-8-1).
