MONTREAL - Sophomore Alexandra Morin-Boucher of
St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., potted three goals and set up another
as McGill blanked Bishop's 4-0 in women's soccer at Molson Stadium,
Friday.
It was the third straight victory for the Martlets (3-2), who
dropped their first two games in the Quebec conference.
Morin-Boucher, a 5-foot-6 striker, was a one-woman wrecking
crew. She tallied in the 48th and 51st minutes, staking McGill to a
2-0 lead. The 21-year-old physical education major then set up
Laura Bland-Lasso, a freshman from Ottawa, to put
the game out of reach in the 73rd minute and capped her scoring
onslaught in the 85th minute.
The four-point performance moved Morin-Boucher into a three-way
tie among conference scoring leaders. She has five goals and seven
points and sits alongside Sherbrooke's Josée
Bélanger (6-1-7) and, Véronique Maranda
(3-4-7) of the Montreal Carabins.
The game featured 16 fouls, including 12 to Bishop's, which was
assessed all four of the yellow warning cards issued by the
referee.
"It was a physical affair for the full 90 minutes," said McGill
head coach Marc Mounicot who was not happy with
the roughhouse style of play by Bishop's. "They tried to neutralize
us with some (unsportsmanlike) tackles and one of the consequences
was an injury to Katherine Green, a 5-foot-11
stalwart defender, with about 10 minutes remaining in the
game."
McGill had a huge territorial advantage, with a 17-2 edge in
shots on net, a 13-1 margin in crosses and an 11-0 difference in
corner kicks.
"We played a very good game but had a hard time finishing in the
last 20 yards heading into halftime," added Mounicot. "But we
maintained a very positive attitude and came out strong in the
second half."
The Martlets (3-2-0) now find themselves in a four-way tie for
second place in the eight-team Quebec league. They will
battle the Patriotes of UQTR (3-2-0) at Molson Stadium on Sunday,
in the opener of a women's and men's doubleheader. Kickoff for the
women's match is slated for 1:30 p.m.
"UQTR has had a very good start this year and we will have to
dig hard to beat them but we're slowly coming around and I think we
will be ready to face that challenge," said Mounicot.
