MONTREAL -- Rookie Jonathan Collin rushed for
two touchdowns and passed for another as McGill snapped a
conference record 17-game losing streak with a stunning 29-11
home-field victory over Sherbrooke before a boisterous university
football crowd of 3,192 at Molson Stadium, Friday.
It marked the first McGill victory since a 6-0 forfeit over St.
Francis Xavier on Oct. 21, 2006 and their first on-the-field
conquest since beating Bishop's 14-0 a week earlier. The now-ended
futility streak had equalled the conference mark established in
1988 by the Carleton Ravens.
The Redmen, who had a 34-16 advantage in first-downs, led by a
precarious 3-2 margin after the opening stanza, then extended that
to 12-9 at the half and 19-11 after three quarters.
Collin, a colossal 6-foot-5, 240-pound pivot from Greenfield
Park, Que., became only the fifth true freshman ever to start at
quarterback for the Redmen and the first since Josh
Sommerfeldt in 1998. Collin completed 21 of 34 passes for
177 yards and one interception. He also carried five times for 21
yards and directed an attack that generated 436 yards of net
offence -- including 260 on the ground -- compared to 347 by the
Vert & Or.
"It's very satisfying to get the monkey off our backs," said
third-year head coach Sonny Wolfe, who was
showered with Gatorade in the dying seconds and was presented with
the game ball after finally earning his first career win as bench
boss of the Redmen. "We have worked very hard to get this win, both
on the field and off, and we needed it as a matter of pride. It's
been a long haul but it is very gratifying."
One of Wolfe's off-field agenda items was getting running back
Andrew Hamilton, a transfer from Concordia who was
on the Alouettes practice roster last year, declared eligible to
play. He was held out of the lineup in last week's loss against the
Montreal Carabins but was finally cleared by school officials some
52 minutes before game time and didn't disappoint.
The six-foot, 198-pound Montreal native who moved to Miami in
his early teens, rushed for 177 yards on 20 carries and added 16
more yards on a pair of kickoff returns. It was the highest
single-game rushing effort by a McGill player since Sept. 10, 2003,
when Mike Samman piled up 212 yards against
Sherbrooke.
"I didn't know what to expect," said Hamilton, who was clocked
at a lightning-quick 4.29 seconds in the 40-yard dash during
training camp. "There was a lot of emotion out there tonight, our
offensive line played great and it was a good team win for us."
Rookie receiver Thomas Fortin, a native of
Gatineau, Que., scored McGill's other TD on a 10-yard strike from
Collin to cap an eight-play, 83-yard scoring drive that put McGill
ahead 19-11 at 11:58 of the third quarter. Fortin ended up snaring
three passes for 31 yards.
Kicker Austin Anderson, the son of legendary
NFL kicker Gary Anderson, rounded out the scoring
for McGill. The native of Canmore, Alta., accounted for nine
points, with three conversions and a pair of field goals from 36
and 20 yards. Anderson, a sophomore who missed six games to injury
last year, is now 7-for-7 lifetime in field goal kicking at
the CIS level, all of them against the Vert & Or.
Sherbrooke's lone TD came on a 25-yard toss from quarterback
Jean-Philippe Shoiry to Jonathan
Masse-Simard in the final minute of the second stanza to
make the score 12-9. Kicker Willian Dion added a
pair of rouges and Sherbrooke's other points came from a safety
conceded in the endzone by Anderson early in the third quarter.
Shoiry, a native of Quebec City, was good on
only 14 of 31 pass attempts for 152 yards. His prime receiver was
Alexandre Beaudoin, who was held to 44 yards on
five receptions. Running back Pascal Fils led all
rushers with 191 yards on 21 carries in a losing cause.
Sherbrooke linebacker Filipe Fonseca-DaSilva
led all players defensively, racking up a whopping 12 tackles,
including a quarterback sack.
The setback put a severe crimp in Sherbrooke's playoff hopes as
they have an exceptionally tough schedule the rest of the way. They
will face Montreal and Concordia twice apiece, with single games
against Laval and Saint Mary's.
McGill (1-1) will host Bishop's next Friday at Molson Stadium,
while Sherbrooke (1-1) hosts Concordia on Sept. 19.
REDMEN RAP: Aside from Collin and Sommerfeldt, the only other
Redmen rookie QBs on record that have started have been
David McKinnon (1997), Vic
Pywowarczuk (1976) and Kevin Smith
(1975)... Charles-Antoine Sinotte led all Redmen
receivers with seven catches for 74 yards... Sophomore
Taylor Kuprowski, overshadowed a little by
Andrew Hamilton, had a career-high 12 carries for
70 yards... McGill played a much more disciplined game than
they did against the Carabins last week. The Redmen were penalized
only six times for 33 yards, compared to their astounding Week 1
total of 23 penalties for 176 yards of real estate... The Redmen
defence forced five Sherbrooke turnovers, all on third-down
conversion attempts. Newcomer Courtenay Bishop, a
rush end who transferred from Concordia, led a much-improved Redmen
defensive effort with 6.5 tackles and a forced fumble. Defensive
backs Anthony Lukca and Greg
Landry registered six and five tackles, respectively.
Landry, a senior from North Vancouver, was also credited with three
knockdowns... Lukca now has 190 career tackles and is tied with
Mike Mahoney for third place among McGill's
all-time leaders... Players ahead of Lukca include J.P.
Darche (203) and Olivier Lefebvre
