LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Sophomore midfielder Anna Smith of Somerville, Mass., scored a goal and set up two
others as visiting McGill cruised to a 4-1 victory over Bishop's in
women's soccer at Coulter Field, Friday.
Adding singles for the winning side was senior Elizabeth
Williams of Calgary, sophomore Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., and
Cristina DiCaprio, a senior from Laval, Que.
Becky Yates, playing in midfield for the first
time in several weeks, scored the Gaiters' only goal in the 72nd
minute. Katie Wallace picked up her third straight
game MVP award, while Hannah Simmmons won similar
honours for the Gaiters.
Shimone Slomowitz of West Vancouver, B.C.,
registered the victory in nets for McGill, which had a 20-5
advantage in shots directed toward the net. The Gaiters'
Koula Trichas kicked aside eight of 12 shots faced
in a losing cause.
"We had possession for more than 75 per cent of the game and
should have been more lethal," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "But the objective was to get three points (in
the standings) and hope for a tie between Sherbrooke and Laval and
that's exactly what happened."
A 1-1 draw in that other contest gave the second-place Martlets
a 9-3-1 record and a one point lead over Sherbrooke in the
eight-team Quebec league, with one game left. Sherbrooke (8-2-3)
will host cewllar-dwelling UQAM (1-10-2) on Sunday afternoon while
McGill closes out their regular schedule with a road game at
fifth-place UQTR (3-7-3).
The seventh-place Gaiters (3-9-1) close out the 2009 season on
the road Sunday at the CEPSUM complex in Montreal as they face the
first-place Carabins (11-1-1).
