MONTREAL -- Pierre-Alexandre Renaud of Laval, Que., and Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 10, 2013.
Renaud, a 22-year-old economics senior on the men's swim team, claimed two gold medals and a pair of silvers to earn 603 points and win swimmer-of-the-meet honours at the RSEQ's third Coupe de Québec competition this season. The event was held Saturday at CEPSUM pool on the campus of Université de Montréal, where the Redmen finished third overall.
The six-foot, 165-pound middle distance specialist won the 400-metre freestyle in three minutes, 58.36 seconds, which was more than four seconds faster than his winning time in the season-opening meet at Trois-Rivières last month. He also guided the 4x50m freestyle relay to a first-place finish in 1:35.15. His silver-medal finishes were in the 200m butterfly (2:04.07) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:40.78).
Davidson, a 20-year-old finance sophomore on the No.1-ranked women's hockey team, scored the deciding goal in two weekend victories for the undefeated Martlets, allowing them to extend their win streak to 32 consecutive regular season games.
The 5-foot-4 forward scored the tying and winning markers in a 3-2 come-from-behind road victory over the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins on Friday. She then tallied the deciding goal in a 3-2 overtime shootout victory against Carleton on Sunday. Davidson leads the nation with nine goals in just six games. She joined the Martlets in 2012 after graduating from Dawson College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
