MONTREAL -- Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., and Alana Battiston of Toronto are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill, for the period ending Feb. 24, 2013.

Bielby, a 23-year-old master's student in electrical engineering, captured a pair of gold medals at the CIS swim championships in Calgary, guiding the Redmen to an eighth-place finish out of 22 competing teams. Bielby, who measures 5-foot-9 and weighs 155 pounds, won the 200-metre individual medley in two minutes flat, breaking both his own school and RSEQ conference record of 2:00.24, which he set in 2011. He also took the 400 IM in a winning time of 4:15.14. Bielby upped his McGill record to 13 career CIS medals, which includes a school record eight golds, one  silver and four bronzes. Bielby merited CIS all-Canadian status for the fourth time and has earned a berth to represent Canada for the third time at the FISU world university games, slated to be held in Russia this summer. The fifth-year veteran is a product of John Abbott College.

Battiston, a fifth-year senior on the women's track and field team, won six medals and was named female athlete of the meet as McGill captured the RSEQ conference championship at Tomlinson Fieldhouse over the weekend. A 5-foot-10 science student, the 25-year-old Battiston accounted for 28 points, or 22.1 per cent of McGill's 126.5 total in the team scoring, helping the Martlets finish just 9.5 points ahead of second-place Sherbrooke. She won both the 60-metre hurdles (9.19 seconds) and the pentathlon with a school record 3,515 points, which currently ranks as the third-highest pentathlon score in the CIS this season. Battiston finished second in the 600m and also helped the Martlets gain second-place finishes in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. She was third in the shot put with a toss of 10.44 metres. A product of Michael Power high school, Battiston graduated from McGill with a BSc in 2010 but returned last fall to work on a second degree in dietetics.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
