MONTREAL – Matthew Beaudet and Sophie Guilmette, both natives of Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Oct. 2, 2022.
 
Beaudet, a 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner with the Redbirds cross-country team, won individual gold and led McGill to finish first of six schools in the men's division of the Capital Classic meet, Saturday. Beaudet, a 22-year-old electrical engineering junior, completed the six-kilometre course in 18 minutes and 37 seconds to finish first of 96 runners. It was the third career gold medal performance for Beaudet, who earned U SPORTS rookie-of-the-year and All-Canadian honours last season.
 
Guilmette, a 5-foot-6 goalkeeper with the women's soccer team, made six saves and registered a pair of shutouts as McGill battled both UQAM at Stade Saputo (Sept. 30) and Bishop's at Molson Stadium (Oct. 2) to identical 0-0 stalemates last week. A first year science student who transferred to McGill this season from the NCAA's Vanderbilt University, Guilmette made four saves in the game at UQAM and added two stops in the contest with visiting Bishop's. She also was called upon to make a huge save late in both games. Guilmette is a product of Vanier College.
