MONTREAL –
Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., and
Jamal Mayali of Toronto, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, March 13, 2022.
Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter on the women’s volleyball team, scored 28 points as the McGill Martlets swept top-seeded Sherbrooke with back-to-back 3-1 victories last weekend to capture the team’s first RSEQ championship in school history and qualify for a berth at the national championship tournament in Calgary, Mar. 25-27. The 22-year-old software engineering junior racked up 27 kills in eight sets, to go along with two assisted blocks. She added eight digs and one assist on defence and passed for a solid 2.22 ratio (out of 3). Iannotti, who serves as a co-captain, was announced last week as a first-team conference all-star and won the RSEQ leadership and community service award. She was recruited to McGill from College Bois-de-Boulogne in 2019.
Mayali, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard on the men’s basketball team, scored 30 points as the McGill Redbirds swept both games against Bishop’s last week, improving the team’s perfect record to 10-0. McGill won 69-55 in Lennoxville on March 10 and 83-80 in Montreal on March 12. The 23-year-old political science senior made nine of 22 field-goal attempts, draining four of 14 attempted three-pointers. He averaged 35.5 minutes of court time and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also pulled down five rebounds and contributed four assists with four steals. Mayali, who leads the league in scoring with an average of 19.2 points per game, enrolled at McGill in 2017 after graduating from Bill Crothers secondary school in Toronto.
