MONTREAL – Swimmers
Clément Secchi, from Aix-en-Province in southern France, and
Daphne Danyluk of Rivière-des-Prairies, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Jan. 19, 2020.
Secchi, a 19-year-old management sophomore, won a combined seven gold medals and was named swimmer of the meet in both Quebec Cup competitions over the weekend in Quebec City. The 5-foot-10 sprinter scored a meet-high 668.5 points (18 points of the second-place finisher) on the FINA scale in Friday’s meet. He finished first in the 50-metre butterfly (24.65), the 50 backstroke (26.60), the 100 back (57.44) and swam leadoff on the winning the 4x50 medley relay (1:45.43). The next day, he was the top-scorer in the men's division with 608.5 points, finishing 28 ahead of his closest competitor. Secchi was first in the 200-metre backstroke (2:07.11) and the 100 butterfly (55.64), and led the winning 4x100 medley relay (3:52.19). He has now swept swimmer-of-the-meet honours in all four Quebec Cup races this season.
Danyluk, a 5-foot-7 sprinter, won a combined five gold medals and a pair of silvers at the third and fourth Quebec Cup meets in Quebec City over the weekend. The 21-year-old anatomy freshman was named female swimmer of the meet in the Friday competition, scoring a meet-high 658.5 points on the FINA scale to win the honour by 52 points. Danyluk finished atop the podium in the 50-metre backstroke (30.16), the 100 back (1:04.79), the 200 butterfly (2:20.50) and swam leadoff on the winning the 4x50 medley relay (1:59.81). The next day, she won the 200 back in 2:19.18, and posted silver medal finishes in the 400 individual medley (5:02.38) and the 4x100 medley relay (4:23.22).
