MONTREAL -- Elizabeth Hirsch of Melrose, Mass., and Tanner Baldin of Brantford, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Sept. 15, 2019.
 
Hirsch, a 5-foot-7 distance runner, registered a gold-medal finish and led the cross-country Martlets to place first of nine universities at the McGill Open meet last Friday on the slopes of Mt. Royal. The 21-year-old biology senior finished first of 86 entries in the four-kilometre race in 14 minutes, 30 seconds. She was 18 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
 
Baldin, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound defenceman and co-captain with the men's lacrosse team, scored the winner – shorthanded two men -- as McGill rallied from a three-goal deficit to topple division-leading Trent University 8-7 in double overtime at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday. Playing with two-men in the penalty-box, McGill faced almost certain defeat in overtime. But just 49 seconds into the second extra period, the 22-year-old civil engineering senior forced a turnover with a mid-field bodycheck and scampered about 50 yards on a breakaway, finding the top left corner of the net for the winning tally. The victory moved improved McGill's record to 2-0 and into first-place, percentage points age of Trent (2-1).
