MONTREAL – Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., and Jack Crosby of Campbell River, B.C., are the McGill University athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 10, 2019.
 
Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter with the volleyball Martlets, scored a game-high 19 points in a 3-0 home-court victory over the Montreal Carabins last Friday. It was the team’s sixth consecutive win as the division-leading Martlets improved to 15-3 and captured the RSEQ conference’s regular season title for only the second time in school history and the first time in 17 years. A 22-year old physical education junior, Vercheval registered 13 kills, two service aces and four stuff blocks in just three sets. She also collected a game-high 15 digs. A product of College Edouard Montpetit, Vercheval is a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary holder who enrolled at McGill in 2016.
 
Crosby, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound middle distance runner with the Redmen track and field squad, produced fourth and fifth-place finishes at the Fast Track National Invitational meet, at the Ocean Breeze Athletics Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., last Friday. The 18-year-old arts freshman just missed the podium in an elite invitational 800-metre race that was clocked in one minute, 53.09 seconds, just shy of the winning time (1:52.04). Crosby also ran the third leg of the 4x400m relay squad to a fifth-place finish in 3:22.72, just shy of the 3:20.46 needed to qualify for nationals.
