MONTREAL –
Benji Kaiserman of Los Angeles, Calif., and
Constanza Martinez-Ramirez, a native of Santiago, Chile, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 2, 2017.
Kaiserman, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound middle infielder, registered a .615 batting average to help guide the baseball Redmen to six consecutive victories last week to finish the regular season undefeated at 16-0. Playing primarily at second base and hitting from the bottom of the batting order, the 21-year-old psychology junior had eight hits in 13 at bats, one double and four walks. He scored a team-leading 10 runs and collected six runs batted in.
Martinez-Ramirez, a 5-foot-2 centre midfielder on the Martlets field hockey team, scored three goals – including a key game-winner -- in three games played in Toronto last weekend. She scored twice in a 4-3 victory over Waterloo on Saturday, then snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a corner in the 68th minute of play as McGill rallied from a two-goal deficit to upset Toronto 4-3 on Sunday. It was McGill's first-ever victory over U of T, breaking a lengthy 0-71-3 winless streak. A 27-year-old who already has a medical degree, she is now in her first year as a doctorate candidate specializing in pathology.
McGill athletes of the week receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
