Samuel Labrecque of Granby, Que., and
Stacy Lee of Vancouver, B.C., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Feb. 22, 2015.
Labrecque, a 5-foot-8, 183-pound defenceman with the No.6-ranked hockey Redmen, earned points on four of McGill's five goals in two playoff games as they swept Queen's 2-1 and 3-1 in a best-of-three semifinal series last week. A first-year transfer from the NCAA's Clarkson University, Labrecque assisted on both goals in Game 1, setting up the winner at 13:44 of the final period last Wednesday. Then in Game 2, the economics major celebrated his 23
rd birthday by the scoring twice in 17 seconds late in the game as McGill overcame a 1-0 deficit with goals at 12:35 and 13:02 of the third period. During the regular season, Labrecque was the top-scoring blueliner in the CIS with 13 goals in 26 games. He is also leading in post-season play with five goals in five games. Prior to enrolling at McGill, he skated for Clarkson, the Nanaimo Clippers (BCJHL) and Stanstead College (MPHL).
Lee, a 21-year-old civil engineering major, won three gold medals as the McGill Martlets captured the Geraldine Dubrule trophy as national champions of the Canadian University Synchronized Swim League in Ottawa last Sunday. The 5-foot-3 junior won the solo routine with a score of 69.4333 points. She also helped the Martlets win the combo routine (65.6667) and the team routine (71.1667). It marked McGill's second consecutive CUSSL title and 12th overall since the league was formed in 2001-02. A product of Bishop's College School, she enrolled at McGill in 2013.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
