MONTREAL – Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., and Mariam Sylla, a native of Conakry, Guinea,  are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Jan. 18, 2015.

Bourque, a 6-foot-5, 192-pound forward with the Redmen basketball team, posted back-to-back “double-doubles”, as McGill swept a pair of key games over Laval last week, winning 69-63 in Quebec City and 73-42 at home, to move into sole possession of first-place in the RSEQ conference with a 6-2 record. The 21-year-old economics sophomore scored a combined 27 points and pulled down 26 rebounds in the two games. He shot 46.2 per cent from the field (12/26) and sank two of six attempts from the foul line. Bourque also added five assists, a pair of steals and one blocked shot. Prior to joining the Redmen in 2013, he starred for College Montmorency.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward with the No.2-ranked basketball Martlets, tallied 31 points and grabbed 26 rebounds as McGill swept a home-and-home series against Laval last week, winning 85-30 on the road (Jan. 8) and 67-50 at home (Jan. 10), to extend their perfect record to 8-0 atop the RSEQ standings. The 22-year-old pharmacology junior shot 45 per cent from the field (9/20) and drained an impressive 13 of 15 shots from the free-throw line (87.7%). She was also credited with three steals, three blocked shot and an assist.  Prior to enrolling at McGill, Sylla starred in the Quebec CEGEP league for College Montmorency.

Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
