MONTREAL –
Alexis Shank of Laval, Que., and
Selima Guidara, a native of Tunis, in Tunisia, are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by
Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Jan. 12, 2025.
Shank, a six-foot, 171-pound goaltender with the hockey Redbirds, tied a school record for most saves in a shutout as McGill stunned visiting UQTR 1-0 last Tuesday (Jan. 7). The 24-year-old economics senior made 44 saves to halt the Patriotes, who had a lopsided 44-25 advantage in shots on net. It was the second shutout of the season and sixth career collegiate goose-egg for Shank, who was recruited in 2021 from the QMJHL's Chicoutimi Saguenéens and attended the Montreal Canadiens rookie camp during his freshman year.
Guidara, a 21-year-old political science sophomore and starting setter for the volleyball Martlets, battled through intense flu symptoms to register a whopping 80 assists as McGill upset undefeated Sherbrooke 3-1 and third-place Laval 3-2 over the weekend. In nine sets overall, the six-footer was also credited with 15 digs, seven service aces, five kills, one stuff block and five assisted blocks. Remarkably, her calming influence and productive passing skills helped three different players register 10 (or more) kills in Friday's road win at Sherbrooke and guided another four teammates to reach the 10-kill plateau in Sunday's home-court victory over Laval. Guidara enrolled at McGill in 2023 after played CEGEP volleyball at Collège Bois-de-Boulogne.
