Rowan Birrell of North Vancouver, B.C., and
Stephy Tchoukuiegno from St. Laurent, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 5, 2023.
Birrell, an 18-year-old biology sophomore on the men’s lacrosse team, earned All-Tournament honours while leading McGill to a 2-1 record and a second-place finish of six teams at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association national championship for the Baggataway Cup, held in Peterborough, Ont., over the weekend. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound attackman scored 10 goals in three contests, including six in a 9-8 quarter-final win over Guelph on Friday and four in a 10-8 victory over Carleton on Saturday. Birrell, who enrolled at McGill in 2022 out of Argyle Secondary School, is a product of the Burnaby Lakers of the British Columbia Jr. A Lacrosse League.
Tchoukuiegno, a 5-foot-7 guard on the women’s basketball team, was a key factor in helping McGill upset defending conference champion UQAM 74-47 in the RSEQ season opener last Thursday. The 21-year-old elementary education sophomore came off the bench to score 14 points in 18 minutes of court time. She added eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. She shot 41.7 per cent from the field (5/12), including a 2-for-7 effort from three-point range, and made two of her three free-throw attempts. Tchoukuiegno was recruited to McGill in 2022 after playing CEGEP ball with Vanier College
