Marc-Andre Benoit of St. Hyacinthe, Que., and
Carolann Cloutier Montreal, are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 23, 2014.
Benoit won six gold medals and smashed a pair of school records leading the McGill men's swim team to finish second of seven teams at the AUS Invitational, a three-day meet hosted by Dalhousie University last weekend. The six-foot, 180-pound freestyle and butterfly specialist easily surpassed his own McGill record in 100-metre fly, touching the wall in 53.44 seconds and destroying the previous standard of 54.50. It was the second fastest 100 fly in the CIS this season. The 24-year-old accounting senior also erased the previous McGill record in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.42. It was an eventful weekend for Benoit, who qualified to swim at the CIS championships in four events, winning the 100 and 200 freestyles, as well as the 50 and 100 butterflys. He also helped the relay squads sweep the 4x100 free and the 4x100 medley. Benoit enrolled at McGill in 2011 out of College de Maisonneuve.
Cloutier, a 5-foot-9 guard on the basketball Martlets, scored a career and game-high 27 points as No.4-ranked McGill defeated Concordia 65-55 to remain undefeated in RSEQ women's basketball last Saturday. She tied for the team lead with 31 minutes of court-time, shooting 11-for-15 from the field, including an impressive 5-for-6 effort from three-point range. The 25-year old master's student in educational psychology is in her second season with the Martlets but final year of eligibility after transferring from UMass. Before that, she played for Dawson College.
Both athletes will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
