MONTREAL – Elizabeth Ling of Calgary, Alta., and Hazem Issa of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 8, 2023.
 
Ling, a 21-year-old civil engineering senior, was named female athlete of the meet after winning three gold medals and one silver as McGill finished first of five women’s teams at the season-opening RSEQ University Cup swim meet in Trois-Rivières, Que., last Friday. The 5-foot-4 sprinter won the 50-metre butterfly (27.58 seconds) and the 100m free (56.98), in addition to helping the 4x50m freestyle relay finish atop the podium (1:45.29). Her silver medal performance was in the 50m backstroke, where she posted a time of 28.83 seconds, just fractions of a second behind the winning time (28.78). She is a product of Westmount Charter School in Calgary.
 
Issa, a 21-year-old civil engineering junior, was named male athlete of the meet after winning three gold medals and one bronze as McGill finished first of five men’s teams at the season-opening RSEQ University Cup swim meet in Trois-Rivières, Que., last Friday. The 6-foot-5, 212-pound sprinter won the 50-metre butterfly (24.59) and guided McGill to victories in both the 4x50m medley relay (1:40.51) and 4x50m freestyle relay (1:32.43). His bronze medal performance was the 100m freestyle (51.34). He enrolled at McGill in 2021 after graduating from Brighton College in Abu Dhabi.
