MONTREAL – Pablo Collin from Marseille, France, and Clara Poiré of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Feb. 26, 2023.

Collin, a 21-year-old computer science sophomore on the men’s swim team, won two golds and a pair of bronze medals to earn first-team All-Canadian honours as McGill finished fifth at the U SPORTS national championship in Victoria, B.C. He was also a recipient of the U SPORTS Community Service Award for combining athletic excellence with leadership and academic prowess. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound freestyle specialist opened the meet last Thursday with a first-place finish in the 400-metre freestyle (3:51.71). On Day 2, he won the 200m free (1:51.19) and swam the second leg of the bronze-medal 4x200m freestyle relay (7:35.78). On Day 3, he led off the 4x100 freestyle relay, which finished third (3:25.62).

Poiré, a 6-foot-2, right-side hitter on the women’s volleyball team, played a key role in guiding McGill to a playoff series victory over the Montreal Carabins to win an RSEQ best-of-three semifinal 2-1 over the weekend, a spectacular matchup that was decided in the fifth and final set on Sunday. Over her 14 sets played during the weekend, the 23-year-old kinesiology senior scored 52.5 points, on the strength of 41 kills, three aces and 8.5 stuff blocks. She added a pair of assists and 26 digs on defence. Poiré registered an impressive 29.3 per cent kill efficiency and accounted for 24.4 per cent of the team’s total points scored. She enrolled at McGill in 2019 out of College Lionel-Groulx.
