MONTREAL –
Donna Ntambue of Montreal-North and
Matthew Beaudet of Montreal’s NDG borough, are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 29, 2023.
Ntambue, a first-year economics student, broke a pair of school records, while winning gold and bronze medals at the McGill Team Challenge track and field meet held last weekend. The 5-foot-9 sprinter surpassed the McGill record in the elite 60-metre race with a gold medal performance of 7.38 seconds, a mark that ranks as the second fastest indoor time in the country this season. The 21-year-old Ntambue also ran leadoff on the bronze-medal winning 4x200m relay which crossed the finish line in a team record of 1:41.18, currently ranked as the fourth-fastest in the nation. That time broke the team's previous best of 1:41.25 set in 2016.
Beaudet, a 22-year-old electrical engineering junior, established two school records while winning a pair of silver medals at the McGill Team Challenge track and field meet. On Saturday, the 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner completed the 1,500-metre race in 3:48.01, erasing the McGill record of 3:50.64 set last year. His time ranks as the sixth fastest in the country this season. On Friday, Beaudet finished second in the 1,000m crossing the finish line in 2:24.76 – which ranks eighth in the nation – to erase the previous McGill record of 2:25.51 set in 2016. Last November, Beaudet broke another McGill record with the top-ranked 3,000m time in the country, clocking a 7:59.08 at a Boston University meet, which surpassed the previous mark of 8:18.79 established in 2016 .
