Top 11 Things You Need to Know About the Sports Complex

Top 11 Things You Need to Know About the Sports Complex

What does the Athletics fee, that I pay as part of my tuition, cover?

The Athletics fee funds the running of the Sports Complex including the programming and services like sports, recreation and the varsity program and includes all expenses related to heating, lighting and cleaning. All students are considered members of the Sports Complex which means you have free access to the gyms, pool, indoor and outdoor track, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and fields as well as free use of select pieces of equipment like balls and some training equipment.

What do I have to pay for?

There are user fees for fitness and recreation classes, intramurals sports, room rentals, some arena activities like shinny hockey and free skating, some equipment rentals (squash and tennis racquets, eye guards, cross country skis, boots and poles and snowshoes) and membership to the Fitness Centre ($25.00 for U-grads and $40.00 for grad students).

How do I find my way around the Sports Complex?

The Sports Complex (map) encompasses not just the building the gym is housed in, but also the playing fields (Molson and Forbes) and the arena. There are directional signs on the walls and suspended from the ceiling in most large common areas. Just in case, here is a primer for getting around the gym:

  • Basement level: Fitness Centre and activity rooms (Mind/Body, Spin, Combat and Aerobics rooms)
  • Main floor: Client Services, Redbird Sports Shop, administration offices, cafeteria, women’s locker room, equipment desk, pool
  • 1st floor: Gyms, men’s locker room, fieldhouse
  • 2nd floor: Kinesiology and physical education department
  • 3rd floor: Sports Medicine, Kinesiology and physical education labs

Can I come to the gym and do my own thing?

Sure. We have open gym times when activity areas are available for free use. Look on the Athletics and Recreation website for a list of drop in recreational hours or feel free to use any of the gyms and the fieldhouse if the schedule indicates that nothing is booked.

What about if I want to play a pickup game of soccer or basketball?

We have drop in times for soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, water polo, ultimate disc and more. Check the Facilities page for an up to date list of hours and activities.

Do I need to bring my own sports equipment?

The equipment desk loans out equipment like basketballs and volleyballs, but you need to bring your own racquets or pay a nominal fee to get a tennis or squash racquet on loan. The Redbird Sports Shop sells some equipment like pool goggles, bathing suits, squash and table tennis balls.

Where can I keep my sports gear?

You can rent a basket for a semester or full year and keep your gear at the gym or you can bring your gear and your own lock and put your stuff in a locker designated for day use. Day lockers must be emptied and locks removed at the end of every day.

How do I sign up for fitness and rec courses and intramurals?

Our on-line system facilitates registration for fitness and recreations courses and intramural teams, court bookings, the purchase of Fitness Centre memberships and lockers. Payment is by credit card only.

Check out our Top Ten Tips to Registering On-Line and FAQ’s.

You can also register in person in the Client Services office located on the main floor of the Sports Centre. Cash, credit and debit are accepted.

Where do I buy tickets to varsity games?

Tickets are on sale ($5.00 for students 10.00 general admission) on-line and at the door.

Do you have a sports clinic where I can get an athletic injury checked out?

You’ll find a comprehensive Sport Medicine Clinic on the 3rd floor of the McGill Sports Centre. McGill students get preferred rates and can often see a physician within a couple of days of calling for an appointment (514-398-7007).

What do I do if I have a question or complaint?

Our doors are always open so drop in any of the administrative offices to speak to members of the Athletics and Recreation staff. You can also forward your questions or complaints through e-mail at feedback.athletics@mcgill.ca or info.athletics@mcgill.ca
