TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. — Poppy Honeybone converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute as the McGill Martlets defeated the UQTR Patriotes 2-1 in RSEQ women's soccer action Friday at Stade CAPS.
The victory evened McGill's record at 1-1-0, while UQTR dropped its season opener and fell to 0-1-0. The Martlets led 1-0 at halftime before the teams traded penalty-kick goals in the second half. McGill scored on both of its shots on target.
Zahra Metivier, a master's student in educational leadership from Toronto, opened the scoring in the 16th minute. She converted a setup from senior midfielder Chloe Renaud, who received a nifty tip pass from rookie midfielder Harper Nelson. Metivier, a first-year transfer who played four seasons at Bishop's, accounted for two of McGill's four attempted shots.
The Patriotes drew even in the 61st minute when Celine Deraedt scored from the penalty spot. McGill goalkeeper Ann-Stephanie Fortin anticipated a shot to the opposite side as Deraedt fired a bullet to the right. The UQTR midfielder accounted for three of her team's four attempted shots and registered its only shot on goal.
The deadlock lasted just over 10 minutes.
Honeybone, a biochemistry senior from Seattle, Wash., restored McGill's lead in the 71st minute, converting a penalty kick with a rocket to the right, past the outstretched hands of 'keeper Kayla Beetz. for her first goal of the campaign. The goal stood as the winner as neither side found the net again.
Fortin was shaken up briefly in the 81st minute after a heavy goalmouth collision when UQTR forward Catherine Fournier charged through the box on an incoming corner kick. But the 5-foot-7 'keeper shook it off and played all 90 minutes, while Beetz went the distance for UQTR. The Martlets held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal, although the teams finished even at four attempted shots apiece.
The match took one hour 55 minutes and was played in a light drizzle with the temperature at 19 C. It featured five yellow cards — three to UQTR and two to the Martlets.
McGill returns home Sunday to face Bishop's at 1 p.m. UQTR visits Montreal the same day at 3:30 p.m.
