TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. — Alexandre Marcoux scored in the first half and Simon Lamarche added an insurance marker in the dying moments as the UQTR Patriotes blanked the visiting McGill Redbirds 2-0 in RSEQ men's soccer action Friday before a crowd of 523 at Stade CAPS.
The result dropped McGill to 0-2-0 on the young season, while UQTR won its season opener to improve to 1-0-0.
Marcoux opened the scoring in the 24th minute, converting a setup from Zakary Minka for his first goal of the campaign. The marker came after UQTR controlled much of the early offence, with McGill goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola stopping a Minka header in the 11th minute.
McGill's lone attempted shot of the opening half came in the 33rd minute when Spencer Neil fired wide left.
The Redbirds generated considerably more pressure after the break. Rookie midfielder Nicholas Minchillo forced UQTR goalkeeper Shems Lidam into a save in the 52nd minute before Nathan Yee struck the post three minutes later. Ashaan Sanghera-Gulamhussein and Samy Rzig also tested Lidam, but the UQTR 'keeper turned aside both attempts to preserve the lead.
McGill's best opportunity to draw even came in the 68th minute when Minchillo won a race with Lidam for a loose ball and found himself all alone at the top of the box facing an empty net. But his attempt sailed wide of the left post, leaving the Patriotes clinging to their 1-0 advantage.
McGill head coach Marc Mounicot was subsequently shown a red card after receiving yellow cards in the 37th and 68th minutes.
Still trailing 1-0 in added time, the Redbirds pushed forward in search of the equalizer but were caught in transition. UQTR broke the other way on a four-on-two rush and Lamarche finished the play at the 90-minute mark, less than four minutes after entering as a substitute, to seal the 2-0 victory.
The Patriotes finished with a 9-6 advantage in attempted shots and held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Lidam stopped all three shots on target for the shutout, while Ciociola made two saves for McGill.
UQTR was assessed three yellow cards, with Minka, Eliot Tabourin and Samuel Kpetemey going into the referee's book.
The Patriotes visit the Montreal Carabins on Sunday at 6 p.m. McGill has a week off before travelling to Quebec City to face the Laval Rouge et Or on Sept. 11 at 8:15 p.m.

TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Qué. — Alexandre Marcoux a marqué en première demie et Simon Lamarche a ajouté un but d'assurance dans les derniers instants pour permettre aux Patriotes de l'UQTR de blanchir les Redbirds de McGill 2-0, vendredi, devant 523 spectateurs au Stade CAPS, dans un match de soccer masculin du RSEQ.
Ce résultat a fait glisser la fiche de McGill à 0-2-0 en ce début de saison, tandis que l'UQTR a remporté son match d'ouverture pour présenter un dossier de 1-0-0.
Marcoux a ouvert la marque à la 24e minute en complétant une passe de Zakary Minka pour inscrire son premier but de la campagne. Le filet est survenu après que l'UQTR eut exercé l'essentiel de la pression offensive en début de rencontre. Le gardien de McGill Ludovyck Ciociola avait notamment repoussé une tête de Minka à la 11e minute.
Le seul tir tenté par McGill en première demie est survenu à la 33e minute, lorsque Spencer Neil a décoché un tir à gauche du filet.
Les Redbirds ont exercé beaucoup plus de pression après la pause. Le milieu recrue Nicholas Minchillo a forcé le gardien de l'UQTR Shems Lidam à effectuer un arrêt à la 52e minute, avant que Nathan Yee ne frappe le poteau trois minutes plus tard. Ashaan Sanghera-Gulamhussein et Samy Rzig ont également mis Lidam à l'épreuve, mais le gardien des Patriotes a repoussé les deux tirs pour préserver l'avance des siens.
McGill a obtenu sa meilleure occasion de créer l'égalité à la 68e minute. Minchillo a devancé Lidam dans une course vers un ballon libre et s'est retrouvé seul à l'entrée de la surface de réparation devant un filet désert. Son tir est toutefois passé à gauche du poteau, permettant aux Patriotes de conserver leur mince avance de 1-0.
L'entraîneur-chef de McGill Marc Mounicot a ensuite été expulsé après avoir reçu des cartons jaunes aux 37e et 68e minutes.
Toujours en retard 1-0 dans le temps additionnel, les Redbirds ont poussé vers l'avant à la recherche du but égalisateur, mais ont été pris en transition. Les Patriotes ont contre-attaqué à quatre contre deux et Lamarche a complété la séquence à la 90e minute, moins de quatre minutes après son entrée dans le match, pour sceller la victoire de 2-0.
Les Patriotes ont terminé la rencontre avec un avantage de 9-6 au chapitre des tirs tentés et de 4-3 pour les tirs cadrés. Lidam a repoussé les trois tirs dirigés vers lui pour signer le jeu blanc, tandis que Ciociola a effectué deux arrêts devant le filet de McGill.
L'UQTR a écopé de trois cartons jaunes, décernés à Minka, Eliot Tabourin et Samuel Kpetemey.
Les Patriotes rendront visite aux Carabins de Montréal dimanche à 18 h. McGill bénéficiera d'une semaine de congé avant de se rendre à Québec pour affronter le Rouge et Or de Laval le 11 septembre à 20 h 15.
