Orange is the new red as McGill captures fifth straight Legacy Game

Olson, Pagé score four apiece as McGill captures fifth consecutive Legacy Game Trophy

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — Rookie Callum Olson of Maple Ridge, B.C., scored four goals, including a natural hat-trick in the fourth quarter, while Zack Pagé of Mascouche, Que., added four goals and two assists as McGill defeated the Bishop's Gaiters 12-7 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action at Percival Molson Stadium, Wednesday, to capture the fifth annual Legacy Game.

The victory was McGill's fifth straight to open the season and improved the first-place Redbirds to 5-0 in the CUFLA East Division. Bishop's dropped to 0-5.

It also marked McGill's fifth victory in as many Legacy Games since the event was inaugurated in 2022. The annual contest, presented by McGill Athletics and Recreation in conjunction with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, recognizes the Indigenous roots of lacrosse as part of Indigenous Awareness Week and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Redbirds wore commemorative orange jerseys instead of their traditional red and white uniforms, while Bishop's also participated in the evening's activities. Commemorative T-shirts were sold in recognition of Orange Shirt Day, which honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples affected by residential schools, celebrates resilience and affirms that every child matters.

"It was really special, to be honest with you," said McGill head coach Andrew Meakes, participating in his first Legacy Game. "It's a solemn day of remembrance, but to see the dialogue generated through lacrosse and building bridges with our First Nations communities was really inspiring."

Meakes pointed in particular to a pre-game visit with the team from Travis Gabriel, a Mohawk wooden lacrosse-stick maker from Kanesatake who has been associated with the McGill program for approximately two decades.

"He spoke to our guys about the higher meaning of the game and linked it back to First Nations culture and bridge building, and how the game was shared among all people and all nations," Meakes said. "He was using the game as an inspirational way to say, 'You're out here playing for something more than just yourselves.' I think it really resonated with the guys."

On the field, McGill took a 4-2 lead after the opening quarter and carried a 6-4 advantage into halftime. The Redbirds stretched that margin to 9-6 through three quarters before Olson took over in the final stanza.

The 19-year-old attackman, an Arts freshman, scored all three McGill goals in the fourth quarter for a natural hat-trick, turning a three-goal advantage into a 12-7 final.

"He's a rookie and comes from a long line of lacrosse family members out west," Meakes said. "He impressed us at camp and has been solid in that left-wing attack role. Tonight, he just broke it open.

"I was laughing with him because I said, 'Were you waiting until I kind of had a heart attack before pulling a hat trick out of your pocket?' He's so humble and coachable, so to see him have a night like that was great."

Pagé continued his torrid start with another four-goal performance to register his third consecutive hat-trick in as many games — and added two assists for a game-high six points.

"He is just on another level," Meakes said. "That guy is the sharpest shooter that I've coached in a long, long time."

McGill players have now combined for 10 hat-tricks in five contests, two in each game played thus far.

John Miraglia, returning from injury, and Liam Miletich scored twice apiece to account for McGill's other four goals. Rookie Tyler Miocevich, an offensive midfielder from Etobicoke, Ont., collected five assists.

Maxwell Chiarella and Liam Reynolds scored twice each for Bishop's, while Benjamin Sipples, Gabe Young and Sam Young added singles.

McGill held a 22-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 margin in the third quarter. Brennan Visokey played all 60 minutes in the Redbirds net to earn the victory, while Nathan George went the distance for Bishop's.

The Redbirds were assessed five penalties, compared with four for the Gaiters. Meakes was particularly encouraged by his team's improved discipline after McGill had been assessed 14 penalties in last Thursday's 14-10 victory at Bishop's.

"The biggest success on defence tonight was the lack of penalties," he said. "None of the cheap stick swings or talking back to the refs. The big sticks, especially the guys who had the most penalties in the Bishop's game last Thursday, really cleaned up their game and put in the effort to use their body and athleticism versus swinging sticks."

Before the opening faceoff, a land acknowledgement was followed by a welcome from elder Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell, former Grand Chief of Akwesasne and a longtime Indigenous leader and advocate. A moment of silence was observed for the children, survivors and families affected by residential and day schools.

At halftime, Barbara Diabo, a member of the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) Nation of Kahnawake, gave a special performance. An award-winning choreographer, Diabo has danced for more than 30 years and creates work highlighting Indigenous themes, stories and perspectives.

Other guests from the Indigenous community included Jeremy Thompson, a member of the Hawk Clan and longtime Haudenosaunee Nationals player, and Isaiah Storm Cree, a Mohawk from Akwesasne and former McGill co-captain who helped establish the Legacy Game as part of the University's Truth and Reconciliation activities.

After the game, the two teams gathered in a ceremonial circle of friendship and a combined team photo before Benoit Gentil, McGill's interim senior director of athletics and recreation, presented the Legacy Game Trophy — a hand-carved wooden lacrosse stick — to the Redbirds captains.

"You match all that with some amazing halftime talent, a big crowd and everyone wearing orange, including the Gaiters, who were fantastic sports and participants in all of this with us," Meakes said. "It was truly special. It was really neat to be a part of."

McGill now has an extended break before hosting Carleton and Ottawa in an Alumni Weekend doubleheader, Oct. 16-17.

REDBIRDS RAP: Page's six-point outing raised his season totals to 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points through five games... Olson has 11 goals on the season after Wednesday's four-goal performance... Miocevich's five assists gave him 13 helpers through five contests... McGill has outscored its opponents 66-40 during its 5-0 start... The Redbirds are 5-0 all-time in the Legacy Game since its inauguration in 2022.

Bishop's a glissé à 0-5.
