OTTAWA — The McGill women's basketball team opened its preseason schedule with a 64-51 loss to the Acadia Axewomen at the Carleton Fall Invitational Tournament, Friday, at the Ravens' Nest.
The contest marked the 107th opener for the Martlets.
McGill struggled to find its shooting touch, connecting on just 18 of 62 attempts from the floor for 29 per cent. Acadia countered with a 47.9 per cent success rate, making 23 of 48 shots, and held the Martlets to 20 per cent from three-point range.
Seyna Diggs paced the Martlets with a game-high 14 points and eight rebounds, including six off the offensive glass. She shot 5-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Teammate Lily Rose Chatila followed with 13 points, going 5-for-5 from the charity stripe and 2-for-7 from beyond the arc. Daniella Mbengo added eight points and five rebounds.
Acadia featured a balanced attack, with 13 of the 15 players who saw action reaching the scoresheet. Isobel MacDonald came off the bench to lead the Axewomen with 13 points in just nine minutes. She was perfect on nine attempts from the free-throw line and added five rebounds. Eva O'Brien contributed 11 points and six rebounds, while Amy Hagman and Ella Hoyt scored eight apiece.
The Axewomen never trailed after scoring the game's first eight points. McGill answered with a 10-2 run to pull even at 10-10 on a three-pointer by Asia Thorne with 3:06 remaining in the opening quarter, but Acadia closed the period with a 7-2 run for a 17-12 advantage.
Acadia stretched its lead to 22-12 early in the second quarter before the Martlets battled back. A three-pointer from Chatila cut the deficit to 26-24 with 2:48 remaining, but the Axewomen scored the final six points of the half to take a 32-24 lead into the intermission.
McGill made another charge after the break. Mbengo's jumper with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter pulled the Martlets to within one at 34-33. Acadia responded with an 8-0 run and eventually carried a 47-40 advantage into the final stanza.
The Axewomen put the game away in the fourth. They opened the quarter with a 9-2 run to build a 56-42 lead and later stretched the margin to a game-high 17 points at 62-45 with 2:38 remaining. Acadia outscored McGill 17-11 in the final period.
The Axewomen held a 34-26 advantage on the boards and doubled McGill 36-18 in points from the paint. Acadia's reserves also outscored the Martlets bench 36-13. Both teams had difficulty protecting the ball, with McGill committing 26 turnovers and Acadia 24. The Axewomen converted those miscues into 24 points, compared with 22 for McGill.
The Martlets finished 6-for-30 from three-point range but were efficient at the free-throw line, making nine of 10 attempts. Acadia was 16-for-18 from the stripe.
In Friday's other tournament matchup, Carleton defeated Concordia 58-40. The tournament continues Saturday at the Ravens' Nest. Acadia (1-1) will meet Concordia (0-1) at 2 p.m., while McGill (0-1) faces host Carleton (1-0) at 4 p.m.

McGill a éprouvé des difficultés au tir, ne réussissant que 18 de ses 62 tentatives, pour un taux d'efficacité de 29 pour cent. Acadia a répliqué avec un taux de 47,9 pour cent, réussissant 23 de ses 48 tirs, tout en limitant les Martlets à 20 pour cent derrière la ligne de trois points.
Seyna Diggs a mené les Martlets avec un sommet dans le match de 14 points, en plus de récolter huit rebonds, dont six en attaque. Elle a réussi cinq de ses 12 tirs et trois de ses quatre lancers francs. Sa coéquipière Lily Rose Chatila a suivi avec 13 points, réussissant ses cinq lancers francs et deux de ses sept tirs de trois points. Daniella Mbengo a ajouté huit points et cinq rebonds.

Acadia a porté son avance à 22-12 tôt au deuxième quart avant de voir les Martlets répliquer. Un tir de trois points de Chatila a réduit l'écart à 26-24 avec 2:48 à jouer, mais les Axewomen ont inscrit les six derniers points de la demie pour retraiter au vestiaire avec une avance de 32-24.
McGill est revenu à la charge après la pause. Un tir de Mbengo, avec 6:41 à jouer au troisième quart, a ramené les Martlets à un seul point, 34-33. Acadia a répondu avec huit points sans réplique avant de conclure la période avec une avance de 47-40.
Les Axewomen ont ensuite mis le match hors de portée au quatrième quart. Elles ont amorcé la période avec une poussée de 9-2 pour porter la marque à 56-42, puis ont creusé l'écart jusqu'à un sommet de 17 points, à 62-45, avec 2:38 à écouler. Acadia a remporté le dernier quart 17-11.
Les Axewomen ont dominé 34-26 au chapitre des rebonds et 36-18 pour les points inscrits dans la raquette. Les réservistes d'Acadia ont également eu le dessus 36-13 sur celles de McGill. Les deux formations ont éprouvé des difficultés à protéger le ballon : les Martlets ont commis 26 revirements et les Axewomen, 24. Acadia a transformé ces erreurs en 24 points, contre 22 pour McGill.
Les Martlets ont terminé la rencontre avec six réussites en 30 tentatives de trois points, mais se sont montrées efficaces à la ligne des lancers francs, réussissant neuf de leurs 10 essais. Acadia a fait mouche sur 16 de ses 18 lancers francs.
Dans l'autre rencontre du tournoi vendredi, Carleton a défait Concordia 58-40. Le tournoi se poursuit samedi au Ravens' Nest. Acadia (1-1) affrontera Concordia (0-1) à 14 h, tandis que McGill (0-1) se mesurera à l'équipe hôte de Carleton (1-0) à 16 h.
