OTTAWA — Zack Pagé of Mascouche, Que., and Torsten Blodgett scored four goals apiece as the McGill Redbirds cruised to a 17-6 road victory over the Carleton Ravens in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action at Ravens Road Field, Sunday.

The result capped a two-win weekend for McGill, which improved to 2-0 under new head coach Andrew Meakes after opening the campaign with a 14-12 home-field victory over Trent on Saturday.

"We've got a young bench this year, so it was the first time we really got to test some of the new systems out," said Meakes. "We have some returning veterans but, with a new head coach, there was definitely a bit of a learning curve at training camp."

McGill took command early, scoring seven times in the opening quarter to build a 7-1 advantage. The Redbirds led 10-2 at halftime and 14-4 after three quarters.

"Today we came out and continued the pressure," Meakes said. "We started mixing in some of the young guys that we just brought on this year. We have a very deep bench and a lot of youth, but they showed the ability to play at the same level as the veterans, and they delivered today."

Pagé and Blodgett led a balanced attack that featured nine McGill goal scorers. Callum Olson added three goals to give the Redbirds three players with hat-tricks. McGill has now registered five hat-tricks over its first two games.

Jason Bonnema scored twice, while John Miraglia, Carson Cowburn, Massimo Thauvette and Sean Doyle added singles.

Goaltender Brennan Visokey, a materials engineering sophomore from Glen Rock, N.J., started between the pipes and was credited with the win before giving way to sophomore Sol Chung for the second half as McGill took advantage of its sizeable lead to give more of its young bench playing time.

Jenson White scored twice for Carleton, while Griffin Armstrong, Austin Fraser, Lucas Haddaway and Jonah Steenbakkers added singles.

McGill held a 30-16 advantage in shots and was assessed eight penalties, while Carleton drew four infractions.

"We've had some injuries as well, and it's always been next man up," Meakes said. "The people who've been next to come in have done the job perfectly, so we're really happy with where we are. The trick now is just continuing it through Queen's."

Pagé finished the weekend with 10 points, including six goals, as the Redbirds scored 31 times in their two season-opening victories.

McGill returns to action against the Queen's Gaels next weekend.

Pagé et Blodgett marquent quatre buts chacun dans une victoire écrasante des Redbirds

Trois joueurs de McGill réussissent un tour du chapeau dans un gain de 17-6 contre Carleton

OTTAWA — Zack Pagé, de Mascouche, au Québec, et Torsten Blodgett ont marqué quatre buts chacun pour mener les Redbirds de McGill à une victoire sans équivoque de 17-6 contre les Ravens de Carleton, dimanche, au terrain Ravens Road, dans un match de l'Association canadienne de crosse au champ universitaire (CUFLA).

Ce gain a couronné un week-end parfait pour McGill, qui a porté sa fiche à 2-0 sous les ordres de son nouvel entraîneur-chef, Andrew Meakes. Les Redbirds avaient amorcé leur campagne samedi avec une victoire de 14-12 à domicile contre Trent.

« Nous avons un jeune groupe cette année, alors c'était vraiment la première occasion de mettre à l'épreuve certains de nos nouveaux systèmes, a indiqué Meakes. Nous avons quelques vétérans de retour, mais avec un nouvel entraîneur-chef, il y a assurément eu une période d'adaptation au camp d'entraînement. »

McGill a rapidement pris les commandes en inscrivant sept buts au premier quart pour se donner une avance de 7-1. Les Redbirds menaient 10-2 à la mi-temps et 14-4 après trois quarts.

« Nous avons maintenu la pression dès le début aujourd'hui, a ajouté Meakes. Nous avons ensuite commencé à faire jouer certains des jeunes que nous venons d'intégrer à l'équipe. Nous avons beaucoup de profondeur et beaucoup de jeunesse, mais ils ont démontré qu'ils pouvaient évoluer au même niveau que les vétérans, et ils ont livré la marchandise aujourd'hui. »

Pagé et Blodgett ont mené une attaque équilibrée qui a vu neuf joueurs de McGill trouver le fond du filet. Callum Olson a ajouté trois buts pour permettre aux Redbirds de compter trois joueurs avec un tour du chapeau. McGill a maintenant réussi cinq tours du chapeau au cours de ses deux premières rencontres.

Jason Bonnema a marqué deux fois, tandis que John Miraglia, Carson Cowburn, Massimo Thauvette et Sean Doyle ont ajouté un but chacun.

Le gardien Brennan Visokey, étudiant de deuxième année en génie des matériaux originaire de Glen Rock, au New Jersey, a amorcé la rencontre devant le filet et a été crédité de la victoire. McGill a dominé 30-16 au chapitre des tirs et a écopé de huit pénalités, contre quatre pour Carleton.

« Nous avons aussi dû composer avec quelques blessures et notre approche a toujours été celle du prochain joueur qui doit prendre la relève, a expliqué Meakes. Ceux qui ont été appelés à le faire ont parfaitement rempli leur rôle. Nous sommes donc très satisfaits de notre situation actuelle. Maintenant, le défi sera de poursuivre sur cette lancée contre Queen's. »

Pagé a terminé le week-end avec 10 points, dont six buts, tandis que les Redbirds ont inscrit 31 buts au cours de leurs deux premières victoires de la saison.

McGill reprendra l'action le week-end prochain contre les Gaels de Queen's.
