MONTREAL — Veteran John Miraglia and rookie Tyler Miocevich each scored three goals as the McGill Redbirds opened their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season with a 14-12 victory over the Trent University Excalibur at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The result gave new Redbirds head coach Andrew Meakes his first victory behind the McGill bench after replacing Nic Soubry, who stepped down last spring.

It was McGill's second consecutive win over Trent and fourth in the last five meetings after the Redbirds halted a five-game losing streak against the Excalibur in 2023.

McGill led 5-3 after the opening quarter and carried a 9-8 advantage into halftime. The Redbirds then outscored Trent 3-1 in the third stanza to take a 12-9 lead into the final quarter. The Excalibur held a 3-2 edge over the final 15 minutes but could get no closer than the two-goal final margin.

McGill had eight different goal scorers, including Torsten Blodgett and Zack Page with two goals apiece, while Dylan Fenton, Callum Olson, Harry Callaghan and Jason Bonnema also found the back of the net.

Reed Chamberlain and Connor Curtis paced Trent with three goals apiece. Mason Tardiff and Jaiden Maseko each scored twice, while Jordan Dool, Trent Stewart and Dallyn Rai rounded out the scoring for the Excalibur.

McGill held a 21-14 advantage in total shots, including a 7-1 margin in the third quarter.

Brennan Visokey went the distance in the McGill net to earn the victory, while Geordy Addison played all 60 minutes and was saddled with the loss for Trent.

McGill was assessed five penalties and Trent had three. The Redbirds scored twice while shorthanded in the first quarter, while Trent connected once with the man advantage.

The Redbirds (1-0), return to action Sunday when they travel to Ottawa to confront the Carleton Ravens.

GAME NOTES: Meakes is assisted on the bench by Maxime Murdoch, Joseph Boehm, Oliver Bolsterli and Duncan Lovell, with former long time bench boss Tim Murdoch returning to serve as a lead program ambassador.

MONTRÉAL — Le vétéran John Miraglia et la recrue Tyler Miocevich ont chacun réussi un tour du chapeau alors que les Redbirds de McGill ont amorcé leur saison de l'Association canadienne de crosse au champ universitaire (CUFLA) avec une victoire de 14-12 contre l'Excalibur de l'Université Trent, samedi, au stade Percival-Molson.

Ce gain était le premier du nouvel entraîneur-chef des Redbirds, Andrew Meakes, depuis qu'il a succédé à Nic Soubry, qui a quitté ses fonctions au printemps dernier.

McGill signait ainsi une deuxième victoire consécutive contre Trent et une quatrième à ses cinq derniers affrontements avec l'Excalibur. Les Redbirds avaient mis fin en 2023 à une série de cinq revers contre cette formation.

McGill menait 5-3 après le premier quart et 9-8 à la mi-temps. Les Redbirds ont ensuite dominé Trent 3-1 au troisième engagement pour porter leur avance à 12-9 avant le dernier quart. L'Excalibur a eu le dessus 3-2 au cours des 15 dernières minutes, sans toutefois parvenir à réduire l'écart à moins de deux buts.

Huit joueurs différents ont marqué pour McGill. Torsten Blodgett et Zach Page ont inscrit deux buts chacun, tandis que Dylan Fenton, Callum Olson, Harry Callaghan et Jason Bonnema ont également fait mouche.

McGill a dominé 21-14 au chapitre des tirs, notamment par une marge de 7-1 au troisième quart.

Brennan Visokey a disputé les 60 minutes devant le filet de McGill pour récolter la victoire. À l'autre bout du terrain, Geordy Addison a également été d'office pendant toute la rencontre et a encaissé la défaite pour Trent.

McGill a écopé de cinq pénalités, contre trois pour Trent. Les Redbirds ont marqué deux fois en désavantage numérique au premier quart, tandis que l'Excalibur a réussi un but en avantage numérique.

Les Redbirds (1-0) reprendront l'action dimanche à Ottawa, où ils rendront visite aux Ravens de Carleton.

NOTES DE MATCH : Meakes est épaulé derrière le banc par Maxime Murdoch, Joseph Boehm, Oliver Bolsterli et Duncan Lovell, tandis que Tim Murdoch, qui a longtemps dirigé l'équipe, est de retour au sein du programme à titre d'ambassadeur principal.
