MONTREAL — Simon Lavigne jumped on a turnover at centre ice and scored at 5:26 of overtime as the top-ranked Concordia Stingers rallied for a 4–3 victory over McGill to capture the 38th annual Corey Cup game in OUA men's university hockey Saturday night at Ed Meagher Arena.
The result halted a four-game win streak and proved costly for McGill (15-7-4), which slipped into a tie with Ottawa (16-8-2) for third place after surrendering a point in overtime. But with the point for an OT loss, McGill has clinched at least a top four finish in the nine team OUA East and home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. And it marked the 22nd consecutive season that McGill has qualified for post-season play.
The Stingers, the defending OUA champions, improved to 18-7-1 and moved within three points of division-leading UQTR with two games remaining in the regular season. Concordia also reduced its magic number to one point to clinch second place in the division.
"It was a tough loss, but there were a lot of positives," McGill head coach David Urquhart said. "What stands out is how we reacted in the face of adversity.We didn't get back from Kingston until 4 a.m., and we played back-to-back overtime games. To turn around that quickly and give an effort like that is exceptional from our guys We had several good chances to win, especially in overtime."
Concordia jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the opening period on goals by Sean Larochelle and Mathieu Bizier, but McGill responded with three unanswered markers to seize a 3–2 advantage late in the second. Alexandre Blanchard got the Redbirds on the board late in the first, before Jeremie Payant scored on the power play and Mathieu Gagnon added another tally at 18:46 of the middle frame.
The Stingers forced overtime when Alexandre Nadeau tied the game at 8:57 of the third period.
Despite a commanding 45–21 edge in shots — including a 21–7 advantage in the opening period — Concordia was repeatedly turned aside by McGill goaltender Nicolas Ruccia, who made 41 saves in a standout performance.
"Our goalie was outstanding tonight and in both games this weekend," said Urquhart. "He gives us a chance to win every night, and that's all you can ask. When you play strong teams, you need confidence that your goalie is going to make the saves and give you a chance to come back and score at the other end."
Nikolas Hurtubise earned the win for Concordia with 26 saves.
Concordia, which boasts the OUA's top-ranked power play, went 0-for-2 with the man advantage, while McGill finished 1-for-2.
The victory gave Concordia a slim 121-120-14 edge in the all-time series between the Montreal rivals since it began in 1975. In Corey Cup play, McGill now holds a 22-13-3 advantage, with Concordia improving its overall Cup record to 13-20-3, including a 1-1-0 mark against UQTR.
The Corey Cup is named after Ronald Cory, a former president of the Montreal Canadiens, who donated the trophy in 1988 for an annual rivalry game symbolizing collegiate hockey supremacy in Montreal.
McGill will wrap up its five-game road trip Wednesday at eighth-place Carleton (10-5-1). Ottawa, meanwhile, will host Concordia on Feb. 13 before visiting McGill the following day for a Valentine's Day matinee at McConnell Arena.
REDBIRDS RAP: This was McGill's 1,800th regular season game since the first intercollegiate league was launched in 1902-03. Since then, McGill has posted a record of 920-770-110... The Redbirds were without the services of team captain Alexandre Gagnon for the third time in the past six games as the team's top faceoff specialist continues to recover from an upper-body injury... The game was officiated by a referee brother act with Mathieu and Simon Cholette working together for the last time as Mathieu was working his last game before retiring... Among the linesmen was Jasmin Boutet, a McGill graduate who played for the Redbirds from 2016 to 2020... Boutet was one of numerous McGill grads in attendance, a group that also included Mark Debusschere (2001-2005), Chris Churchill-Smith (2004-2008), Leonard Verrilli (2006-2010), Ken Covo (1976-1981) and Mike Farmer (1976-1979)... MONTRÉAL — Simon Lavigne a profité d'un revirement au centre de la patinoire pour marquer à 5 min 26 s de la prolongation et permettre aux Stingers du Concordia, premiers au classement national, de signer une victoire de 4–3 contre McGill afin de mettre la main sur la 38e édition annuelle de la Coupe Corey, samedi soir, en hockey masculin universitaire de l'OUA, à l'aréna Ed Meagher.
Le revers a mis fin à une séquence de quatre victoires consécutives et s'est avéré coûteux pour McGill (15-7-4), qui a glissé à égalité avec Ottawa (16-8-2) au troisième rang de la division Est après avoir échappé un point en prolongation. Cela marque la 22e saison consécutive où McGill se qualifie pour les séries éliminatoires.
Mais grâce au point obtenu pour cette défaite en prolongation, McGill s'est assuré au moins une place parmi les quatre premières équipes de la division Est de l'OUA, qui compte neuf équipes, ainsi que l'avantage de jouer à domicile lors du premier tour des séries éliminatoires.
Champions en titre de l'OUA, les Stingers ont porté leur fiche à 18-7-1 et se sont approchés à trois points du meneur de division, l'UQTR, avec deux matchs à disputer au calendrier régulier. Concordia a également réduit à un point son chiffre magique pour s'assurer de la deuxième place dans l'Est.
« C'est une défaite difficile, mais il y a beaucoup de positif à retenir, a déclaré l'entraîneur-chef de McGill, David Urquhart. Ce qui ressort, c'est notre façon de réagir dans l'adversité. On est rentrés de Kingston à 4 h du matin et on disputait un deuxième match consécutif en prolongation. De livrer une performance comme celle-là dans ces circonstances, c'est exceptionnel de la part des gars. On a eu plusieurs bonnes chances de gagner, surtout en prolongation. »
Le Concordia a pris les devants 2–0 en première période grâce aux buts de Sean Larochelle et de Mathieu Bizier, mais McGill a répliqué avec trois filets sans réplique pour prendre une avance de 3–2 tard en deuxième période. Alexandre Blanchard a lancé la remontée des Redbirds en fin de premier tiers, avant que Jérémie Payant ne marque en avantage numérique et que Mathieu Gagnon n'ajoute un autre but à 18 min 46 s du deuxième engagement.
Les Stingers ont forcé la tenue de la prolongation lorsque Alexandre Nadeau a créé l'égalité à 8 min 57 s de la troisième période.
Malgré une nette domination de 45–21 au chapitre des tirs — dont un avantage de 21–7 en première période — le Concordia a souvent été frustré par le gardien de McGill, Nicolas Ruccia, qui a réalisé 41 arrêts dans une performance remarquable.
« Notre gardien a été exceptionnel ce soir et tout au long du week-end, a ajouté Urquhart. Il nous donne une chance de gagner chaque soir, et c'est tout ce qu'on peut demander. Quand on affronte de grosses équipes, il faut avoir confiance que ton gardien va faire les arrêts clés et te permettre de revenir dans le match à l'autre bout de la patinoire. »
Nikolas Hurtubise a obtenu la victoire devant le filet du Concordia avec une performance de 26 arrêts.
Le Concordia, qui possède le meilleur jeu de puissance de l'OUA, a toutefois été blanchi en deux occasions avec l'avantage d'un homme, tandis que McGill a terminé la rencontre avec un rendement d'un but en deux occasions.
La victoire a permis au Concordia de prendre une mince avance de 121-120-14 dans la série de tous les temps entre les deux rivaux montréalais depuis le début de leur rivalité en 1975. En matchs de la Coupe Corey, McGill conserve toutefois l'avantage avec une fiche de 22-13-3, tandis que le Concordia affiche désormais un dossier global de 13-20-3, incluant une marque de 1-1-0 contre l'UQTR.
La Coupe Corey porte le nom de Ronald Cory, ancien président des Canadiens de Montréal, qui a fait don du trophée en 1988 pour un match annuel symbolisant la suprématie du hockey universitaire montréalais.
McGill complétera son voyage de cinq matchs à l'étranger mercredi contre Carleton, huitième au classement (10-5-1). Ottawa, pour sa part, accueillera le Concordia le 13 février avant de rendre visite aux Redbirds le lendemain pour un duel de la Saint-Valentin prévu en matinée à l'aréna McConnell.

Depuis lors, McGill affiche un bilan de 920 victoires, 770 défaites et 110 matchs nuls...
