LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Etienne Gagnon posted a double-double to lead No. 2-ranked Bishop's to an 87-53 victory over visiting McGill in RSEQ men's basketball action Thursday night at Mitchell Gym.

The result gave BU a four-game season sweep over the Redbirds but McGill continues to hold a sizeable 140-79 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1967.

The division-leading Gaiters took control early and steadily pulled away, outscoring the Redbirds 21-17 in the opening quarter before delivering a decisive 24-6 second period that sent them into halftime with a commanding 45-23 advantage. Bishop's continued to extend the margin after the break, holding a 63-36 lead after three quarters before closing out the win with a 24-17 fourth.

For McGill (2-14), rookie guard Emmanuel Tchicaya provided one of the few bright spots on the night. Coming off the bench, the 6-foot-2, 169-pound point guard paced the Redbirds with a career-high 14 points on an efficient 5-for-9 shooting performance, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. He also chipped in three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 26 minutes.

A 23-year-old Montreal native, Tchicaya joined McGill this season after playing with Dax Gamarde in France's Élite 2 league. He has also gained experience in Poland and Spain, and Thursday's outing marked his most productive offensive showing in a Redbirds uniform.

Teammates Miles King and Alexandre Fortin each added eight points for McGill, while Saransh Padhy and Felix Theriault contributed seven apiece.

Bishop's (14-2) showcased its depth throughout the contest, with 12 of the 13 players who dressed finding their way onto the scoresheet. The Gaiters shot 52.2 per cent from the field, hit 10-of-28 attempts from beyond the arc (35.7 per cent), and finished with a 44-37 edge on the boards while committing just 11 turnovers.

Gagnon paced BU with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Bishop's received additional offensive contributions from Ulrich Larochel and David Navarro, who each scored 17 and 13 points respectively as part of the Gaiters' balanced attack.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the loss mathematically eliminated McGill from postseason contention. The Redbirds will look to finish the campaign on a positive note Saturday when they host Concordia (8-8) in the annual George Lengvari Cup rivalry game.

Bishop's, meanwhile, remains atop the RSEQ standings and will return to action Feb. 12 when it travels to Concordia.

Ce résultat permet à l'Université Bishop's de remporter les quatre matchs de la saison contre les Redbirds, mais McGill conserve un avantage considérable de 140 à 79 dans la série historique qui remonte à 1967.

Les Gaiters, leaders de la division, ont pris le contrôle dès le début et ont progressivement creusé l'écart, devançant les Redbirds 21-17 au premier quart-temps avant de réaliser un deuxième quart-temps décisif 24-6 qui leur a permis de mener 45-23 à la mi-temps. Bishop's a continué à creuser l'écart après la pause, menant 63-36 après trois quarts-temps avant de conclure la victoire avec un quatrième quart-temps 24-17.

Pour McGill (2-14), le garde rookie Emmanuel Tchicaya a été l'un des rares points positifs de la soirée. Entré en jeu depuis le banc, le meneur qui mesure 6 pieds 2 pouces et 160 livres, a mené les Redbirds avec un record personnel de 14 points, grâce à un excellent 5 sur 9 au tir, dont 3 sur 5 à trois points. Il a également ajouté trois rebonds, une passe décisive et un interception en 26 minutes.

Âgé de 23 ans et originaire de Montréal, Tchicaya a rejoint McGill cette saison après avoir joué avec Dax Gamarde dans la ligue française Élite 2. Il a également acquis de l'expérience en Pologne et en Espagne, et la rencontre de jeudi a été sa performance offensive la plus productive sous le maillot des Redbirds.

Ses coéquipiers Miles King et Alexandre Fortin ont chacun ajouté huit points pour McGill, tandis que Saransh Padhy et Felix Theriault ont contribué à hauteur de sept points chacun.

Bishop's (14-2) a démontré toute sa profondeur tout au long du match, 12 des 13 joueurs alignés ayant inscrit leur nom au tableau d'affichage. Les Gaiters ont tiré à 52,2 % depuis le terrain, ont réussi 10 de leurs 28 tentatives à trois points (35,7 %) et ont terminé avec un avantage de 44-37 au rebond, tout en ne commettant que 11 pertes de balle.

Gagnon a mené BU avec 17 points et 12 rebonds. Bishop's a bénéficié de contributions offensives supplémentaires d'Ulrich Larochel et David Navarro, qui ont respectivement marqué 17 et 13 points dans le cadre de l'attaque équilibrée des Gaiters.

Avec trois matchs restant à jouer dans la saison régulière, cette défaite élimine mathématiquement McGill de la course aux séries éliminatoires. Les Redbirds tenteront de terminer la saison sur une note positive samedi lorsqu'ils accueilleront Concordia (8-8) dans le cadre du match annuel de la George Lengvari Cup.

Bishop's, quant à lui, reste en tête du classement de la RSEQ et reprendra la compétition le 12 février lorsqu'il se rendra à Concordia.
