MONTREAL — Robert Gerstner of the McGill University men's track and field team has earned the RSEQ major award for most outstanding field performance over the 2025-26 season. He was also one of seven Redbirds to merit first-team all-star status after winning gold at the conference championship meet held at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse last weekend.

Other Redbirds to win gold and earn first-team honours include William Sanders and Luca Nicoletti, both from Ottawa, in addition to Sean Adams of State College, Penn., Ben Gates of Regina, Samuel Hepworth of Montreal and Sacha Dernoncourt from Baton Rouge, La.
 
Gerstner, 23, is a second-year master's student in physics, who transferred to McGill last season after completing his undergraduate science degree at Western in 2024.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound native of East St. Paul, Man., is the RSEQ long jump champion for the second straight season after finishing first at this year's league championship meet with a leap of 7.31 metres. He also capturing the title last season with a jump of 7.07m in Sherbrooke. At the 2025 championship meet, he also added bronze medals in the 60 metres (6.92) and the triple jump (13.51).
 
Gerstner broke McGill's long jump record twice in the past month. He first cleared 7.32m on Jan. 30 at the Jim Daly Bison Classic in Winnipeg, surpassing the previous school mark of 7.20m set in 1996. Two weeks later, he improved that standard to 7.56m at the UMass Lowell River Hawk Invitational in Boston on Feb. 6.
 
The 7.56m jump currently ranks first in U SPORTS this season, according to Trackie.com. The mark is just eight centimetres shy of the RSEQ conference record of 7.64m set in 2003 by UQAM's Patrick Massok.Gerstner is a two-time recipient of McGill's athlete of the week honour, earning the award on Feb. 24, 2025, and again on Feb. 5, 2026.

ATHLÉTISME — Le sauteur en longueur de McGill Robert Gerstner nommé performance de l'année au RSEQ, parmi sept Redbirds honorés

MONTRÉAL — Robert Gerstner, membre de l'équipe masculine d'athlétisme de l'Université McGill, a remporté le prix majeur du RSEQ pour la performance de l'année aux épreuves de sauts au cours de la saison 2025-26. Il figure également parmi les sept Redbirds nommés au sein de la première équipe d'étoiles après avoir remporté l'or aux championnats de conférence disputés le week-end dernier au complexe sportif Richard-Tomlinson.

Les autres Redbirds sacrés champions et honorés au sein de la première équipe d'étoiles sont William Sanders et Luca Nicoletti, tous deux d'Ottawa, ainsi que Sean Adams (State College, Penn.), Ben Gates (Regina), Samuel Hepworth (Montréal) et Sacha Dernoncourt (Baton Rouge, La.).

Âgé de 23 ans, Gerstner est étudiant de deuxième année à la maîtrise en physique. Il s'est joint à McGill la saison dernière après avoir obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences à l'Université Western en 2024.

Mesurant 1,96 m et pesant 86 kilos, le natif d'East St. Paul, au Manitoba, est champion du RSEQ au saut en longueur pour une deuxième saison consécutive après avoir remporté l'épreuve au championnat de cette année grâce à un bond de 7,31 mètres. Il avait également décroché le titre l'an dernier à Sherbrooke avec un saut de 7,07 m. Lors du championnat de 2025, il avait aussi ajouté des médailles de bronze au 60 mètres (6,92 s) et au triple saut (13,51 m).

Gerstner a battu le record de McGill au saut en longueur à deux reprises au cours du dernier mois. Il a d'abord franchi 7,32 m le 30 janvier lors du Classique Jim Daly Bison à Winnipeg, surpassant l'ancienne marque d'école de 7,20 m établie en 1996. Deux semaines plus tard, il a amélioré ce standard à 7,56 m lors de l'Invitation River Hawk de l'Université du Massachusetts à Lowell, à Boston, le 6 février.

Son saut de 7,56 m constitue actuellement la meilleure performance de la saison dans U SPORTS, selon le site Trackie.com. Cette marque se situe à seulement huit centimètres du record du RSEQ de 7,64 m établi en 2003 par Patrick Massok, de l'UQAM.

Gerstner a également été nommé athlète de la semaine à McGill à deux reprises, soit le 24 février 2025 et le 5 février 2026.
