MONTREAL — McGill wrapped up its 124th season of men's basketball Thursday night with an 82-68 setback to visiting UQAM at Love Competition Hall, bringing an emotional Seniors Night and Black History Month celebration to a close.
Before tipoff, head coach Ryan Thorne recognized veterans Matt Phaneuf and Alexis Messier, both from Gatineau, Que., in a centre-court ceremony marking their final game in a Redbirds uniform.
On the court, McGill (2-17) battled early but trailed 24-16 after the opening quarter and 45-35 at halftime. UQAM (7-11) extended the margin to 64-47 through three quarters before the Redbirds outscored the visitors 21-18 in the final frame.
Luis Micourt, a junior from Ottawa, paced McGill with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Erwin-Loic Ngouadjeu-Kitio, a first-year transfer from the Saskatchewan Huskies, added nine points and five rebounds. Phaneuf contributed eight points, three assists and a pair of steals in 30 minutes of action. Sophomore Alexandre Reinert-Woodfine chipped in eight points and rookie Miles King added seven off the bench.
As a team, McGill shot 41.7 per cent from the field (25-for-60) and connected on 10-of-32 attempts from three-point range. The Redbirds went 8-of-15 from the free-throw line, committed 15 turnovers and were outrebounded 41-30.
UQAM shot an efficient 33-for-66 from the field, including 7-of-20 from long distance, and 9-of-12 from the foul line. The Citadins also held a 46-28 edge in points in the paint and finished with 21 assists.
Guerdy Jean led UQAM with 22 points as the Citadins took three of four meetings from McGill this season. The Redbirds still maintain a 55-42 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1972.
It was a rebuilding year for a young McGill roster composed of nine freshmen, four sophomores and six juniors — two of whom are set to graduate.
Phaneuf, a 5-foot-8 point-guard, dressed for a career total of 46 regular season games over his three seasons. The International Development Studies major scored 142 points with 60 rebounds, 26 treys, 48 assists and 19 steals. His most intriguing confrontations no doubt were against his older brother, Alec Phaneuf, also a point-guard, who played for the Ottawa Gee-Gees this season after four years at Concordia.
Messier, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard, saw duty in 39 regular season contests over his three seasons. The economics and finance major tallied 196 points, 77 rebounds, and 29 assists to go along with 39 treys, 33 steals and four blocked shots.
Unique this year, was a 1-2 mark against OUA and AUS opponents in non-conference contests that counted only in the RSEQ standings, an pilot project implemented by the Quebec league coaches.
With experience gained across a demanding schedule, the Redbirds now turn their focus toward offseason development and continued program growth under Thorne's leadership.
Although McGill's campaign is done, the other four teams in the Quebec league will wrap up their regular season this weekend, before the semifinals begin on Feb. 25 with fourth-place UQAM at division-leading Bishop's and third-seeded Concordia visiting second place Laval.

MONTRÉAL — McGill a mis un terme à sa 124e saison de basketball masculin jeudi soir en s'inclinant 82-68 devant l'UQAM au Love Competition Hall, lors d'une soirée marquée par la célébration des finissants et le Mois de l'histoire des Noirs.
Avant la rencontre, l'entraîneur-chef Ryan Thorne a rendu hommage aux vétérans Matt Phaneuf et Alexis Messier, tous deux originaires de Gatineau, lors d'une cérémonie au centre du terrain pour souligner leur dernier match en uniforme des Redbirds.
Sur le parquet, McGill (2-17) a livré bataille en début de match, mais tirait de l'arrière 24-16 après le premier quart et 45-35 à la mi-temps. L'UQAM (7-11) a accentué son avance à 64-47 après trois quarts avant de voir les Redbirds dominer 21-18 au dernier engagement.
Luis Micourt, un joueur de troisième année originaire d'Ottawa, a mené l'attaque de McGill avec 16 points grâce à une performance de 6-en-7 au tir. Erwin-Loic Ngouadjeu-Kitio, un transfert de première année des Huskies de la Saskatchewan, a ajouté neuf points et cinq rebonds. Phaneuf a contribué huit points, trois passes décisives et deux interceptions en 30 minutes de jeu. Le joueur de deuxième année Alexandre Reinert-Woodfine a inscrit huit points et la recrue Miles King en a ajouté sept en sortie de banc.
Collectivement, McGill a affiché un taux d'efficacité de 41,7 % (25-en-60), réussissant 10 de ses 32 tentatives de trois points. Les Redbirds ont converti huit de leurs 15 lancers francs, commis 15 revirements et ont été dominés 41-30 au chapitre des rebonds.
L'UQAM a maintenu un rendement de 33-en-66 au tir (50,0 %), dont 7-en-20 derrière l'arc, et 9-en-12 aux lancers francs. Les Citadins ont également dominé 46-28 au chapitre des points dans la peinture et ont récolté 21 passes décisives.
Guerdy Jean a mené l'UQAM avec 22 points alors que les Citadins ont remporté trois des quatre affrontements face à McGill cette saison. Les Redbirds conservent toutefois l'avantage historique 55-42 dans une série amorcée en 1972.
Il s'agissait d'une année de reconstruction pour une jeune formation de McGill composée de neuf recrues, quatre joueurs de deuxième année et six de troisième année, dont deux finissants.
Phaneuf, meneur de jeu de 5 pieds 8 pouces, a disputé 46 matchs de saison régulière en trois saisons. Étudiant en développement international, il a inscrit 142 points, capté 60 rebonds, réussi 26 tirs de trois points et ajouté 48 passes décisives et 19 interceptions. Il a notamment croisé le fer avec son frère aîné Alec Phaneuf, également meneur, qui évoluait cette saison avec les Gee-Gees d'Ottawa après quatre années à Concordia.
Messier, un arrière de 6 pieds 2 pouces, a pris part à 39 matchs de saison régulière en trois campagnes. L'étudiant en économie et finance a amassé 196 points, 77 rebonds et 29 passes décisives, en plus de réussir 39 tirs de trois points, 33 interceptions et quatre contres.
Fait particulier cette saison, McGill a compilé une fiche de 1-2 contre des équipes de l'OUA et de l'AUS lors de matchs hors conférence comptant uniquement au classement du RSEQ, dans le cadre d'un projet pilote mis en place par les entraîneurs du circuit québécois.
Fort de l'expérience acquise au terme d'un calendrier exigeant, McGill se tourne maintenant vers l'intersaison afin de poursuivre le développement du programme sous la direction de Thorne.
Si la saison des Redbirds est terminée, les quatre autres équipes du circuit québécois concluront leur calendrier régulier ce week-end avant le début des demi-finales le 25 février, alors que l'UQAM, quatrième, visitera Bishop's, championne de division, et que Concordia, troisième, se rendra à Laval, deuxième au classement.
