(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)
MONTREAL — The McGill University Redbirds are back in the U SPORTS football Top 10 for the first time in more than 23 years.
McGill was ranked No. 9 in the national poll released Monday, marking the program's first appearance in the weekly U SPORTS rankings since Sept. 4, 2003, when it was ranked No. 5.
The Redbirds, listed 12th a week ago, moved into the Top 10 after improving to 4-1 with a 47-27 victory over Bishop's at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday. The four victories represent McGill's highest win total since the team finished 4-4 in 2016 and is also McGill's best start to a season since 2002, when it started at 4-1 en route to a 7-1 first-place finish and captured the league's Dunsmore Cup championship.
The Redbirds have also clinched an RSEQ playoff berth with three games remaining in the regular season.
McGill received 10 points in the media poll and 16 from the ELO rankings for a combined total of 26, one point ahead of No. 10 Guelph and 10 behind McMaster, previously ranked 11th, which moved into the poll at No. 8 with 36 points.
The U SPORTS football Top 10 combines the ELO rankings and a media poll, with each component accounting for 50 per cent of the total.
McGill's return to the national rankings has been fuelled by strong performances on both sides of the ball.
The Redbirds' defence ranks third in U SPORTS in fewest points allowed, surrendering 17.0 per game, and fourth in fewest yards conceded at 329.4 per contest. The defensive unit also ranks ninth nationally with eight quarterback sacks and is tied for 13th with four interceptions.
Offensively, McGill ranks sixth in the country with 476.2 yards per game and ninth with an average of 22.6 first downs.
McGill is one of three RSEQ teams in the national rankings.
The undefeated Laval Rouge et Or (5-0) remained No. 1 with a maximum 160 points, while the Montreal Carabins (4-1) held the No. 2 position with 142. Queen's (5-0) moved up one spot to No. 3, followed by Saskatchewan (4-1) and Western (4-1). Saint Mary's (5-0) remained sixth, Windsor (4-2) moved up to seventh, while McMaster, McGill and Guelph rounded out the Top 10.
The Redbirds are on a bye week and will get an opportunity to test themselves against the country's top-ranked team when they visit Laval on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on TVA Sports.
McGill will then return to Percival Molson Stadium for its final two regular-season games, hosting Montreal on Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. as part of Homecoming before facing Sherbrooke on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
