Hat-trick trio keeps McGill perfect as Redbirds get last word in 14-13 nail-biter against Gee-Gees

Pagé scores four, Blodgett and Olson add three apiece as McGill holds off second-place Ottawa 14-13

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL
—
Zack Pagé scored four goals, while Torsten Blodgett and Callum Olson also added hat-tricks and the McGill Redbirds survived a furious Ottawa comeback to defeat the visiting Gee-Gees 14-13 in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association thriller at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The victory, McGill's seventh straight to open the season, clinched a playoff berth for the first-place Redbirds (7-0), who celebrated graduating seniors day by handing second-place Ottawa (5-2) its second loss of the campaign.

It marked McGill's best start since 2024, when the Redbirds completed a perfect 10-0 regular season.

"It was a battle," said McGill head coach Andrew Meakes. "The Gee-Gees are an incredibly gifted offensive team. We knew they'd come back firing, but our guys persevered."

Ottawa led 5-4 after an entertaining opening quarter, but McGill seized control with five goals in the second stanza to carry a 9-6 advantage into halftime.

The Gee-Gees stormed back with three consecutive goals early in the third quarter to pull even at 9-9. Ottawa outscored McGill 4-2 in the period, setting the stage for a dramatic final stanza with the Redbirds clinging to an 11-10 lead.

McGill's task was complicated by a pair of three-minute stick penalties that allowed Ottawa to capitalize on the man advantage.

The Gee-Gees erased a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, pulling even at 13-13 before Olson scored the winner at 11:55, assisted by graduating senior John Miraglia.

"We had to battle back," Meakes said. "The Gee-Gees have some shooters and they made us pay for the penalties we took. But our guys persevered."

Pagé's four-goal performance raised his season total to 21 goals through seven games..

Blodgett added two assists to finish with five points, while rookie Tyler Miocevich also collected five points on a goal and four helpers. Miraglia scored twice and added an assist, while Tyler Prior rounded out the scoring with a single marker.

Julien Belair paced Ottawa with five goals and an assist. Hunter Lubiniecki added two goals and three helpers, while Ben Kromer, Elliot Malcolm, Aidan Parker, Jack McCaig, Blake Herd and Owen Wills supplied the other Gee-Gees goals.

Brennan Visokey played all 60 minutes in the McGill net and was credited with the victory, while Finn Harapiak went the distance for Ottawa and was saddled with the loss. Shots on goal were not available.

"Brennan made some huge stops for us," Meakes said. "At any moment it could have turned, but he really stood on his head and helped us push through."

Meakes also singled out co-captain Lorenzo Costello and Jake Brady for their work with the long-stick defensive unit, along with faceoff specialist Luke Nickel.

"Lorenzo played like a man possessed tonight," Meakes said. "He had a phenomenal game."

The Redbirds were assessed four penalties, compared with nine for the Gee-Gees.

The victory carried additional significance as McGill honoured graduating seniors John Miraglia, Rowan Burrell, Preston Norris and Maverick Hosel before their final regular-season home game at Percival Molson Stadium.

Approximately 30 former players also returned to campus for the program's alumni homecoming weekend celebrations.

"It was important to us to show character and perseverance," Meakes said. "We had a house full of Redbirds alumni, and we wanted to show up for them."

McGill will close out its regular-season schedule with three road games, visiting Trent (4-2-0) on Oct. 24, Queen's (4-3-0) on Oct. 25 and Ottawa (5-2-0) on Nov. 1.

The Redbirds remain in the driver's seat for the CUFLA East Division pennant, although the race is not yet decided. McGill can guarantee the division title with two more victories. Ottawa can only catch McGill by sweeping their three remaining games, with the head-to-head record determining the division champion.

Ottawa returns to action Sunday, Oct. 18, when it hosts Trent at 5 p.m.
