MONTREAL — The Italian national team scored seven unanswered goals and shut out McGill 7–0 in a women's hockey exhibition Thursday night at McConnell Arena.
It marked the Martlets second-ever confrontation against a national team, dating back to 6-0 setback to China on Nov. 26, 2003.
Italy, preparing for next month's Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, improved to 5-0-1 since opening its pre-Olympic camp in Montreal last November, a run that includes a 7–0 win over the Montréal Carabins and a 10–0 decision against Concordia.
Italy held a 39–10 edge in shots and led 1–0 after the first period before stretching the margin to 3–0 through two. Kristin Della Rovere scored twice, while Justine Reyes, Matilde Fantin, Franziska Stocker, Marta Mazzocchi and Sara Kaneppele added single goals.
The Azzurri went 0-for-1 on the power play, while McGill finished 0-for-3 with the extra skater. Winning goaltender Martina Fedel went the distance for Italy and posted a 10-save shutout.
Jade Rivard-Coulombe started for McGill and stopped 11 of 13 shots before being replaced at the 10:48 mark of the second period. Megane Pilon played the remainder of the game and turned aside 21 of 26 shots.
It was the first game in more than a month for the Martlets, who dropped to 3-10-5 overall.
Italy was coached by McGill hockey graduate Alexandre Tremblay, who was wearing a McGill navy blue necktie and filled in as bench boss since head coach Eric Bouchard was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict with his QMJHL's Shawinigan Cataractes. Former McGill netminder Karel Saint-Laurent served as Italy's goaltending coach, while ex-Martlets associate coach Kayla Tutino returned to her playing career two years ago and recorded two assists on the game's first two goals.
Italy continues its series against RSEQ teams Friday against the Montréal Carabins and Sunday versus the Bishop's Gaiters. McGill has a week off before beginning a home-and-home series with Concordia, starting Jan. 16 at the Ed Meagher Arena and concluding Jan. 18 at McConnell.
NOTES: Three members of the Italian consulate in Montreal attended the game, including Anna Colarusso (president of Com.It.Es), Fortunato Mangiola (Italian trade consul) and Enrico Pavone (consul general).

MONTRÉAL — L'équipe nationale italienne a marqué sept buts sans riposte et a battu McGill 7-0 lors d'un match amical de hockey féminin jeudi soir à la McConnell Arena.
Il s'agissait de la deuxième confrontation des Martlets contre une équipe nationale, après leur défaite 6-0 contre la Chine le 26 novembre 2003.
L'Italie, qui se prépare pour les Jeux olympiques d'hiver du mois prochain à Milano-Cortina, a amélioré son bilan à 5-0-1 depuis l'ouverture de son camp préolympique à Montréal en novembre dernier, une série qui comprend une victoire 7-0 contre les Carabins de Montréal et une victoire 10-0 contre Concordia.
L'Italie a dominé 39-10 au chapitre des tirs au but et menait 1-0 après la première période avant d'augmenter son avance à 3-0 après deux périodes. Kristin Della Rovere a marqué deux buts, tandis que Justine Reyes, Matilde Fantin, Franziska Stocker, Marta Mazzocchi et Sara Kaneppele ont ajouté un but chacune.
Les Azzurri ont échoué leur seule tentative en supériorité numérique, tandis que McGill a échoué ses trois tentatives avec une joueuse supplémentaire. La gardienne victorieuse, Martina Fedel, a joué tout le match pour l'Italie et a réalisé un blanchissage avec 10 arrêts.

L'Italie était entraînée par Alexandre Tremblay, diplômé en hockey de McGill, qui portait une cravate bleu marine de McGill et remplaçait l'entraîneur-chef Eric Bouchard, indisponible en raison d'un conflit d'horaire avec les Cataractes de Shawinigan de la LHJMQ. L'ancien gardien de but de McGill, Karel Saint-Laurent, a occupé le poste d'entraîneur des gardiens de but de l'Italie, tandis que l'ancienne entraîneuse adjointe des Martlets, Kayla Tutino, a repris sa carrière de joueuse il y a deux ans et a enregistré deux passes décisives sur les deux premiers buts du match.
L'Italie poursuit sa série contre les équipes du RSEQ vendredi contre les Carabins de Montréal et dimanche contre les Gaiters de Bishop's. McGill a une semaine de congé avant d'entamer une série de matchs aller-retour contre Concordia, qui débutera le 16 janvier à l'aréna Ed Meagher et se terminera le 18 janvier à McConnell.
