PETERBOROUGH, Ont. —
Adam Hawrelak of Edmonton, Alta., scored what proved to be the game-winning marker just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter as the No. 5-ranked Trent Excalibur knocked off top-ranked McGill 11-10 in a wild, Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association confrontation at Justin Chiu Stadium, Sunday.
In a slugfest that had McGill holding a 20-16 edge in shots on goal, the rivals were knotted at 6-6 at the halftime mark and Trent held a slim 10-9 edge after three quarters.
Trent opened the scoring just seconds after the opening faceoff but the Redbirds rallied with four goals in the first quarter from Zack Page (Aurora, Ont.),
Mark Symon (Toronto),
Massimo Thauvette (Montreal) and
Torsten Blodgett (Vancouver, BC).
After Hawrelak's early strike in the final stanza put the Excalibur ahead 11-9, Blodgett responded midway through the fourth to close the gap. McGill had a chance to force overtime in the dying seconds, but Montrealer
Rowan Birrell was turned aside by Trent goaltender
Callan Baker, who stopped 10 of 20 shots faced for the victory.
Henry Komosa went the distance in the Redbirds crease and was credited with five saves on 16 shots.
McGill added two more in the second from
Dylan Fenton (Whitby, Ont.) and
Owen Howard (Toronto) but Trent stormed back with five unanswered, including tallies from
Nick Fournier,
Mason Tardiff of Calgary, who finished with a game-high four, and
Curtis Conley.
The teams also traded blows in the third stanza, with McGill's
John Miraglia (Long Valley, N.J.), Fenton's second of the game and Birrell. But that was countered by Tardiff,
Reed Chamberlain,
Jack MacAlpine and
Adam Thistlewaite, who netted a pair. That left Trent clinging to a one-goal edge heading into the final frame.
The Redbirds had swept both regular-season contests against Trent last year en route to a perfect 10-0 record, but the Excalibur flipped the script in this early-season clash. The rivals will renew hostilities Sept. 14 at Percival Molson Stadium in a mid-season game that could arguably decide first place in the CUFLA East..
McGill (1-1) concludes its three-game road swing Sept. 13 in Kingston against Queen's (0-2) at 2 p.m. Trent (2-0) visits Bishop's (0-0) the same day at 7 p.m.

Les Redbirds rugissent, Excalibur résiste : la remontée de McGill échoue de peu dans une défaite 11-10
Un affrontement à 11 buts voit les meneurs changer dans une confrontation classique entre rivaux.
PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — Adam Hawrelak, d'Edmonton, en Alberta, a marqué le but décisif à seulement 12 secondes du quatrième quart-temps, permettant à l'équipe Trent Excalibur, classée cinquième au pays, de battre l'équipe McGill, classée première, 11 à 10, lors d'un match endiablé de la Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) au stade Justin-Chiu, dimanche.
Dans un match acharné où McGill menait 20-16 au nombre de tirs au but, les rivaux étaient à égalité 6-6 à la mi-temps et Trent menait de justesse 10-9 après trois quarts-temps.
Trent a ouvert le score quelques secondes après le coup d'envoi, mais les Redbirds ont réagi en marquant quatre buts au premier quart-temps grâce à Zack Page (Aurora, Ontario), Mark Symon (Toronto), Massimo Thauvette (Montréal) et Torsten Blodgett (Vancouver, BC).
Après le but précoce de Hawrelak dans la dernière période, qui a donné une avance de 11-9 à Excalibur, Blodgett a réagi à mi-chemin du quatrième quart pour réduire l'écart. McGill a eu une chance de forcer la prolongation dans les dernières secondes, mais Rowan Birrell (Montréal) a été repoussé par le gardien de Trent, Callan Baker, qui a arrêté 10 des 20 tirs qu'il a affrontés pour remporter la victoire. Henry Komosa a joué tout le match dans la zone des Redbirds et a réalisé cinq arrêts sur 16 tirs.
McGill a ajouté deux autres buts en deuxième période grâce à Dylan Fenton (Whitby, Ontario) et Owen Howard (Toronto), mais Trent a riposté avec cinq buts sans réponse, dont ceux de Nick Fournier, Mason Tardiff de Calgary, qui a terminé avec quatre buts, le meilleur total du match, et Curtis Conley.
Les deux équipes ont également échangé des coups au troisième tiers, avec des buts mcgillois de John Miraglia (Long Valley, New Jersey), le deuxième de Fenton dans le match et Birrell. Mais Tardiff, Reed Chamberlain, Jack MacAlpine et Adam Thistlewaite, qui a marqué deux fois, ont répliqué. Trent conservait ainsi un avantage d'un but avant le dernier tiers.
Les Redbirds avaient remporté les deux matchs de saison régulière contre Trent l'année dernière, terminant avec un bilan parfait de 10-0, mais les Excalibur ont renversé la vapeur dans ce choc en début de saison. Les rivaux se retrouveront le 14 septembre au stade Percival-Molson pour un match de mi-saison qui pourrait bien décider de la première place dans la division Est de la CUFLA.
McGill (1-1) termine sa série de trois matchs à l'extérieur le 13 septembre à Kingston contre Queen's (0-2) à 14 h. Trent (2-0) se rend chez Bishop's (0-0) le même jour à 19 h.
