OTTAWA, Ont. — Rowan Birrell and Torsten Blodgett each netted four goals and Liam Miletich added three as McGill powered past Ottawa 14-7 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play, Saturday, at Gee-Gees Field.
The Redbirds, ranked No. 1 in the CUFLA Power Poll, improved to 4-1-0 atop the CUFLA East Division standings. The Gee-Gees slipped to 1-2-1, good for fifth place.
McGill jumped out early with four first-quarter goals, including tallies from Blodgett, Birrell, Miletich and John Miraglia, and carried a 6-3 lead into halftime. The third quarter proved decisive as the Redbirds poured in five markers, highlighted by Birrell's third of the day and Blodgett's game-winner at 12:06.
Ottawa's offence was paced by Samuel Ouellette, who struck three times, while Zachary Moen added a pair. Julien Belair chipped in with a goal and four helpers for a five-point outing.
Miletich collected a six-point soiree (3-3—6), while Miraglia finished with five points, including a game-high four assists. Dylan Fenton and Joshua Jewell added singles for McGill.
Freshman goaltender Brennan Visokey went the distance for McGill and was credited with the win. Ottawa starter Finn Harapiak also went the full route and took the loss.Shots on goal were not available.
The contest featured a total of 14 penalties called — eight to Ottawa and six against McGill.
The Redbirds (4-1-0) continue their road swing with a visit to Lennoxville, Que., against Bishop's (2-1-0) on Sept. 25. Ottawa (1-2-1) is back in action Sept. 27 when they host Trent (3-1-0) at Gee-Gees Field.
