OTTAWA —McGill exploded early and never looked back, defeating the Carleton Ravens 9-1 in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at RCGT Park. The win gave the Redbirds their second straight triumph after halting an eight-game season-opening skid, while also avenging a lopsided 10-0 mercy-rule setback to the Ravens on Aug. 30.

Left-hander Tate Spence, a sophomore from Salmon Arm, B.C.,  went the distance for McGill, scattering four hits and striking out eight over seven innings to notch his first win at the university level. He allowed just one walk and one earned run in a 94-pitch outing.

The Ravens countered with Owen Gibson, who lasted three and a third frames, yielding three hits, five runs (three earned), with three walks, three hit batsmen and no strikeouts. Reliever Robby Baas absorbed the loss, his first of the season, while Jayce Boshart was tagged for five hits and three runs over the final two innings.

McGill outhit Carleton 10-4 and took advantage of control issues on the mound, as the Ravens staff hit five batters. The Redbirds also drew three walks, while both sides committed one error. McGill stranded 11 runners compared to Carleton's 10.

Offensively, the Redbirds spread production throughout the order. Catcher Robert Glusker and first baseman Nathaniel Steffler each delivered two hits, with Glusker driving in two runs and Steffler knocking a two-run double in the sixth. Third baseman Gabriel Reque Cruz added a pair of hits, including a two-run double in the opening frame, while right fielder Nathaniel Factor chipped in a double and scored twice. Those four players accounted for all of McGill's multi-hit efforts.

Carleton, limited to just four knocks, saw its lone multi-hit performance come from Marshall McKinnon, who doubled and scored the Ravens' only run in the seventh. He crossed the plate on Sal Lima's RBI single to centre field.

McGill did most of its damage early, plating three runs in the first inning on a fielder's choice and Reque Cruz's double to centre. Glusker's RBI single in the second extended the lead, then back-to-back hit batters and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth chased Gibson from the game. The Redbirds tacked on insurance in the sixth, with Steffler's double scoring Glusker and Komyerov driving home Steffler on a groundout. Glusker added his second RBI single in the seventh before Steffler capped his two-hit day with another line-drive single.

The result lifted McGill to 2-8 heading into the back half of Saturday's twin bill, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. The same two sides are also slated to clash in another doubleheader Sunday at RCGT Park. Carleton slipped to 7-5 with the setback.

Glusker and Steffler lead balanced attack as McGill outhits Ravens 10-4

OTTAWA — McGill a explosé dès le début et n'a jamais regardé en arrière, battant les Ravens de Carleton 9-1 lors du premier match d'un programme double samedi au parc RCGT. Cette victoire a permis aux Redbirds de remporter leur deuxième triomphe consécutif après avoir mis fin à une série de huit défaites consécutives en début de saison, tout en prenant leur revanche sur la défaite écrasante 10-0 infligée par les Ravens le 30 août.

Le lanceur droitier Tate Spence, étudiant de deuxième année originaire de Salmon Arm, en Colombie-Britannique, a tenu toute la distance pour McGill, dispersant quatre coups sûrs et retirant huit frappeurs sur des prises en sept manches pour remporter sa première victoire au niveau universitaire. Il n'a concédé qu'un seul but sur balles et un point mérité en 94 lancers.

Les Ravens ont riposté avec Owen Gibson, qui a tenu trois manches et un tiers, concédant trois coups sûrs, cinq points (trois mérités), avec trois buts sur balles, trois frappeurs touchés et aucun retrait sur des prises. Le releveur Robby Baas a encaissé la défaite, sa première de la saison, tandis que Jayce Boshart a concédé cinq coups sûrs et trois points au cours des deux dernières manches.

McGill a dominé Carleton 10-4 et a profité des problèmes de contrôle sur le monticule, les lanceurs des Ravens ayant frappé cinq frappeurs. Les Redbirds ont également obtenu trois buts sur balles, tandis que les deux équipes ont commis une erreur chacune. McGill a laissé 11 coureurs sur les bases, contre 10 pour Carleton.

En attaque, les Redbirds ont réparti leur production sur l'ensemble de l'ordre des frappeurs. Le receveur Robert Glusker et le premier but Nathaniel Steffler ont chacun frappé deux coups sûrs, Glusker produisant deux points et Steffler frappant un double de deux points en sixième manche. Ces quatre joueurs ont été les seuls à frapper plusieurs coups sûrs pour McGill.

Carleton, limité à seulement quatre coups sûrs, a vu sa seule performance à plusieurs coups sûrs venir de Marshall McKinnon, qui a frappé un double et marqué le seul point des Ravens en septième manche. Il a franchi le marbre sur un simple de Sal Lima au champ centre.

McGill a fait le plus de dégâts en début de match, marquant trois points en première manche sur un choix défensif et un double de Reque Cruz au centre. Le simple de Glusker en deuxième manche a prolongé l'avance, puis deux frappeurs consécutifs et un but sur balles avec les bases pleines en quatrième manche ont chassé Gibson du match. Les Redbirds ont ajouté une assurance en sixième manche, avec le double de Steffler qui a permis à Glusker de marquer et Komyerov qui a ramené Steffler à la maison sur un roulant. Glusker a ajouté son deuxième simple bon pour un point en septième manche avant que Steffler ne termine sa journée avec deux coups sûrs, dont un autre simple en flèche.

Ce résultat porte le bilan de McGill à 2-8 avant la deuxième partie du programme double de samedi, dont le coup d'envoi est prévu à 15 h. Les deux mêmes équipes s'affronteront également dimanche dans un autre programme double au RCGT Park. Carleton a vu son bilan passer à 7-5 après cette défaite.
