KINGSTON, Ont. – Senior Joshua Jewell of La Cañada, Calif., scored five times as McGill outlasted Queen's 10-7 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play, Saturday at Miklas-McCarney Field.

Jewell, a 6-foot-3, 188-pound midfielder, struck twice in the opening half and added three more after the break, including the game-winner on a third-quarter man-up situation, giving the Redbirds (2-1) their second victory of the season. It marked the latest in a long line of standout scoring feats for McGill, as the five-goal standard has been achieved 37 times in team history.

The 22-year-old economics major became the team's first-ever California native when he enrolled at McGill in 2022. A few weeks ago, he was selected a recipient of the Redbirds new Sachin Anand Founder's Award, named in honour of the team's former captain, manager, head coach, treasurer and president, who founded the program as a freshman midfielder in 2001. As a result, Jewel has switched his jersey number this year from 32 (worn over his first three seasons) to 17, in honour of Anand's old number. The award is presented to a graduating senior who embodies hard work, reliability and service to the team.

"Josh had a terrific game," said McGill head coach Nicolas Soubry. "He put himself in places to succeed, dodging with speed or catching the ball in space and making the right play. He kept his game very simple and he was able to take capitalize on  our offensive movement and being at the right place at the right time. He scored goals every single way you can imagine: on rebounds, on outside shots, when catching the ball inside and that goes to show you his versatility and reliability in all situations."

Jewel's offensive outburst was supported by single tallies from Dylan Fenton, John Miraglia, Jack Bamford, Mark Symon and Massimo Thauvette. Bamford also added two assists for a three-point outing, while Miraglia and Owen Howard chipped in with a pair of helpers apiece.

McGill, the top-ranked team in a CUFLA Pre-Season Power Poll, led 1-0 after the opening quarter, 3-2 at halftime and 8-4 after three. Queen's ranked fourth in the poll, dropped to 0-3. They attempted to keep pace with goals from Ryan Gonsalvez, who tallied twice, along with singles from Kai Faller, Reed Allen, Zachary and Jacob McLean, Liam Mathers and Dean Fawthrop. Faller collected a team-high three points with one goal and two assists.

"I think things are starting to click," noted Soubry. "We were in control the game early but Queen's was taking the (offensive pressure) and kept up with us in the first half. But as the game continued, our guys just performed better. Perhaps we were in better physical shape and they couldn't handle the punches anymore and we (took control) of the play." 

The teams finished even in shots at 20 apiece. McGill goalie Henry Komosa, a management senior from Potomac, Md., went the distance and turned aside 13 shots for the win, while Queen's counterpart Niklas Kindbom stopped 10 of 20 in a losing cause.

The game was tightly whistled, with McGill assessed eight penalties and Queen's tagged nine times. The Redbirds made the most of their opportunities, converting once with the man advantage.

Jewell's performance placed him alongside some of the program's most prolific single-game scorers. The school record belongs to Cameron McGinnis, who scored eight in a 14-8 playoff win at Queen's on Oct. 28, 2022. Anders Bjella owns a seven-goal performance from a 2015 playoff win over Western. A host of Redbirds have posted six-goal games (see list below). Before Jewell, 21 others have reached the five-goal plateau since the team began playing in 2001.

McGill returns home after their three-game road trip to face No.5-seeded Trent (2-0) in the team's Home Opener on Sunday (Sept. 14) in a 3 p.m. faceoff at Percival Molson Stadium.  Meanwhile, Queen's enters a bye week and will resume play on Sept. 26 when it hosts Carleton (1-1) under the lights.

Le rêve californien pour les Redbirds de lacrosse

Les cinq buts de Jewell permettent à McGill de battre Queen's 10-7

KINGSTON, Ontario – Joshua Jewell, véteran originaire de La Cañada, en Californie, a marqué cinq buts samedi au Miklas-McCarney Field, permettant à McGill de battre Queen's 10-7 dans le cadre d'un match de la Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA).

Jewell, un milieu de terrain de six pieds et trois pouces et 188 poids, a marqué deux fois en première mi-temps et trois autres fois après la pause, dont le but décisif lors d'une situation d'avantage numérique au troisième quart-temps, offrant ainsi aux Redbirds (2-1) leur deuxième victoire de la saison. Il s'agit de la dernière d'une longue série de performances exceptionnelles pour McGill, qui a atteint la barre des cinq buts à 36 reprises dans l'histoire de l'équipe.

Cet étudiant en économie de 22 ans est devenu le premier joueur originaire de Californie à rejoindre l'équipe lorsqu'il s'est inscrit à McGill en 2022. Il y a quelques semaines, il a été sélectionné pour recevoir le nouveau prix Sachin Anand Founder's Award des Redbirds, nommé en l'honneur de l'ancien capitaine, gérant, entraîneur principal, trésorier et président de l'équipe, qui a fondé le programme en tant que milieu de terrain de première année en 2001. En conséquence, Jewel a changé son numéro de maillot cette année, passant du 32 (qu'il a porté pendant ses trois premières saisons) au 17, en l'honneur de l'ancien numéro de Sachin Anand. Ce prix est décerné à un étudiant de dernière année qui incarne le travail acharné, la fiabilité et le dévouement à l'équipe.

« Josh a fait un match formidable », a déclaré Nicolas Soubry, entraîneur-chef de McGill. « Il s'est placé aux bons endroits pour réussir, esquivant avec rapidité ou attrapant le ballon dans l'espace et faisant le bon choix. Il a joué de manière très simple et a su tirer profit de nos mouvements offensifs et se trouver au bon endroit au bon moment. Il a marqué des buts de toutes les manières imaginables : sur des rebonds, sur des tirs extérieurs, en attrapant le ballon à l'intérieur, ce qui montre sa polyvalence et sa fiabilité dans toutes les situations. »

L'explosion offensive de Jewel a été soutenue par des buts de Dylan Fenton, John Miraglia, Jack Bamford, Mark Symon et Massimo Thauvette. Bamford a également ajouté deux passes décisives pour un total de trois points, tandis que Miraglia et Owen Howard ont contribué avec deux passes décisives chacun.

McGill, l'équipe la mieux classée dans le sondage pré-saison de la CUFLA, menait 1-0 après le premier quart-temps, 3-2 à la mi-temps et 8-4 après le troisième quart-temps. Queen's, classée quatrième dans le sondage, a chuté à 0-3. Elle a tenté de suivre le rythme grâce à deux buts de Ryan Gonsalvez et à un but chacun de Kai Faller, Reed Allen, Zachary et Jacob McLean, Liam Mathers et Dean Fawthrop. Faller a récolté trois points, le plus grand nombre de l'équipe, avec un but et deux passes décisives.

« Je pense que les choses commencent à s'améliorer », a noté Soubry. « Nous avons contrôlé le match dès le début, mais Queen's a pris l'avantage (en matière d'offensive) et nous a suivis de près pendant la première mi-temps. Mais au fur et à mesure que le match avançait, nos joueurs ont tout simplement mieux joué. Peut-être étions-nous en meilleure forme physique et n'ont-ils plus pu encaisser les coups, ce qui nous a permis de prendre le contrôle du jeu. »

Les deux équipes ont terminé à égalité avec 20 tirs chacune. Le gardien de McGill, Henry Komosa, étudiant en gestion originaire de Potomac, dans le Maryland, a joué tout le match et a repoussé 13 tirs pour remporter la victoire, tandis que son homologue de Queen's, Niklas Kindbom, a arrêté 10 tirs sur 20 dans une cause perdue.

Le match a été très sifflé, McGill ayant écopé de huit pénalités et Queen's de neuf. Les Redbirds ont su tirer le meilleur parti de leurs occasions, convertissant une fois leur avantage numérique.

La performance de Jewell le place parmi les meilleurs buteurs du programme en un seul match. Le record de l'école appartient à Cameron McGinnis, qui a marqué huit buts lors d'une victoire 14-8 en séries éliminatoires à Queen's le 28 octobre 2022. Anders Bjella détient le record de sept buts marqués lors d'une victoire en séries éliminatoires contre Western en 2015. De nombreux Redbirds ont inscrit six buts lors d'un match (voir la liste en-haut). Avant Jewell, 21 autres joueurs avaient atteint le plateau des cinq buts depuis que l'équipe a commencé à jouer en 2001.

McGill revient à domicile après une série de trois matchs à l'extérieur pour affronter Trent (2-0), classé n° 5, lors du match d'ouverture à domicile de l'équipe, dimanche 14 septembre, à 15 h, au stade Percival Molson. Pendant ce temps, Queen's entame une semaine de repos et reprendra le jeu le 26 septembre en accueillant Carleton (1-1) sous les projecteurs.
