MONTREAL – Nicolas Carrillo delivered a walk-off RBI single as the Université de Montréal rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge McGill 6-5 in men's university baseball action at Complexe Sportif  Claude-Robillard, Wednesday night.

The Redbirds (0-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Second baseman Tairou Komyerov of Cambridge, Mass., walked and later scored on a two-run single from designated hitter Davis Nickel of Toronto. Nickel came around on a single by left-fielder Alex Strapko , also from Toronto.

Two more Torontonians played a role when McGill added another run in the second as right-fielder Radbod Yazdanfar reached on catcher's interference and scored on a sacrifice fly from shortstop William Durnford.

Strapko doubled in the sixth and later scored on a single by first baseman Dawson Kusel of Louisville, Colorado, while Durnford crossed again in the seventh after reaching on a walk and advancing on a U de M error.

The Carabins chipped away with a first-inning RBI single from Philippe Doin and a two-run fifth highlighted by Doin being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a ground-out from William Dupuis.

After McGill extended its cushion to 5-3, U de M struck in the final frame. Doin drew a walk, Dupuis singled, and Luke De Swart drove home one run with a single. An error allowed Dupuis to tie the game before Carrillo delivered his decisive game-winning single to right.

Four McGill pitchers combined to walk nine batters and hit another. Starter Donovan Worrall (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) worked into the fifth for McGill but did not factor in the decision. Relievers Xavier Felx of St. Lambert, Que., Eli Brisman of New York City and Kusel all appeared before Dylan Yang from Scarsdale, N.Y., took the loss, yielding the winning run (unearned) in the seventh.

Carabins starter Josua Ouellet tossed a gem and went the distance for the win. He threw 84 pitches and allowed two runs (none earned) while scattering four hits, six strikeouts and one walk over six innings.

At the plate, multi-hit performances came from Strapko (2-for-3, double, RBI) for McGill, while Carrillo (2-for-4, RBI) and Dupuis (2-for-4, RBI) led U de M.

Team totals saw each club collect seven hits. McGill committed three errors, while the Carabins were charged with four.

The Redbirds are playing an independent schedule this year in the wake of both Concordia and UQTR dropping their baseball programs. McGill will now turn its attention to hosting a Saturday doubleheader (11 a.m. & 2 p.m.) against Académie de Baseball du Canada (ABC), a high-performance program for elite players aged 16-19 from Quebec and the Maritimes.

U de M improves to 1-0 and will await a return visit from McGill on Sept. 17 at 8 p.m..

ROSTER RAP: The 2025 edition of the Redbirds features a 30-man roster composed of 16 freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and five seniors. The geographical breakdown includes 12 players from Ontario, seven from Quebec, two from British Columbia, seven from the USA, one from South Africa and one from the United Arab Emirates.

MONTRÉAL – Nicolas Carrillo a frappé un simple décisif qui a permis à l'Université de Montréal de remonter au score avec trois points en fin de septième manche et de l'emporter 6-5 contre McGill lors d'un match de baseball universitaire masculin disputé mercredi soir au Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard.

Les Redbirds (0-4) ont pris une avance de 3-0 dès la première manche. Le deuxième base Tairou Komyerov, de Cambridge, dans le Massachusetts, a obtenu un but sur balles et a ensuite marqué grâce à un simple de deux points du frappeur désigné Davis Nickel, de Toronto. Nickel a ensuite marqué grâce à un simple du champ gauche Alex Strapko, également de Toronto.

Deux autres Torontois ont joué un rôle lorsque McGill a ajouté un autre point en deuxième manche, le voltigeur droit Radbod Yazdanfar ayant atteint la première base sur une interférence du receveur et marqué sur un sacrifice au bâton du joueur d'arrêt-court William Durnford.

Strapko a frappé un double en sixième manche et a ensuite marqué sur un simple du joueur de premier but Dawson Kusel, de Louisville, au Colorado, tandis que Durnford a franchi le marbre une nouvelle fois en septième manche après avoir atteint la première base sur un but sur balles et avancé sur une erreur de l'Université de Montréal.

Les Carabins ont réduit l'écart grâce à un simple de Philippe Doin en première manche et à deux points marqués en cinquième manche, notamment lorsque Doin a été touché par un lancer avec les bases pleines et qu'un roulant de William Dupuis a permis de marquer un point.

Après que McGill ait porté son avance à 5-3, l'U de M a frappé en dernière manche. Doin a obtenu un but sur balles, Dupuis a frappé un simple et Luke De Swart a permis de marquer un point grâce à un simple. Une erreur a permis à Dupuis d'égaliser le score avant que Carrillo ne frappe le simple décisif vers la droite.

Quatre lanceurs de McGill ont concédé neuf buts sur balles et en ont frappé un autre. Le lanceur partant Donovan Worrall (4,0 manches lancées, 3 coups sûrs, 1 point mérité, 2 buts sur balles, 4 retraits au bâton) a lancé jusqu'à la cinquième manche pour McGill, mais n'a pas été pris en compte dans la décision. Les releveurs Xavier Felx de Saint-Lambert, au Québec, Eli Brisman de New York et Kusel ont tous fait leur apparition avant que Dylan Yang de Scarsdale, New York, n'encaisse la défaite, concédant le point gagnant (non mérité) en septième manche.

Le lanceur partant des Carabins, Josua Ouellet, a réalisé une excellente performance et a tenu toute la distance pour remporter la victoire. Il a lancé 84 balles et concédé deux points (aucun mérité) tout en dispersant quatre coups sûrs, six retraits sur des prises et un but sur balles en six manches.

À la batte, Strapko (2 en 3, double, point produit) a réalisé plusieurs coups sûrs pour McGill, tandis que Carrillo (2 en 4, point produit) et Dupuis (2 en 4, point produit) ont mené l'U de M.

Au total, chaque club a récolté sept coups sûrs. McGill a commis trois erreurs, tandis que les Carabins en ont commis quatre.

Les Redbirds jouent un calendrier indépendant cette année, suite à l'abandon des programmes de baseball de Concordia et de l'UQTR. McGill se concentrera désormais sur l'organisation d'un programme double samedi (11 h et 14 h) contre l'Académie de baseball du Canada (ABC), un programme de haut niveau destiné aux joueurs d'élite âgés de 16 à 19 ans du Québec et des Maritimes.

L'U de M améliore son bilan à 1-0 et attendra la visite de McGill le 17 septembre à 20 h.

ROSTER RAP : L'édition 2025 des Redbirds compte 30 joueurs, dont 16 étudiants de première année, sept de deuxième année, deux de troisième année et cinq de quatrième année. Sur le plan géographique, 12 joueurs viennent de l'Ontario, sept du Québec, deux de la Colombie-Britannique, sept des États-Unis, un d'Afrique du Sud et un des Émirats arabes unis.
