MONTREAL – Rachèle Béliveau, who recently retired as head volleyball coach at McGill University, was the recipient of a prestigious Board of Directors Award, as the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec crowned the winners of its 40th RSEQ Gala, Friday, at the Eaton Centre in downtown Montreal.
 
The event brought together more than 260 people from across the 14 regional branches of the RSEQ, presenting laureates for the high school and university sectors.
 
Béliveau was honoured for her pioneering work and longevity with the McGill Martlets. In 1991, she was one of the first women in Canada to be appointed as a full-time volleyball coach at the university level. She stepped down last March after 34 years (33 seasons) at the helm with a 734-679-2 record overall. It's the longest coaching career in McGill sporting history, men or women. During her tenure, the team had 78 conference all-stars, 19 All-Canadians, 21 league award recipients and eight major national award honourees. Three of her players have been inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame.
 
Béliveau was voted Quebec conference coach of the year six times, along with CIAU coach of the year honours in 1997. She led McGill to its first-ever Quebec volleyball title in 2021-22 and guided the Martlets to a berth at the national championship tournament on five occasions, with a best-ever third-place finish in 2012.
