MONTREAL –
Tricia Deguire, a former McGill University all-star goaltender, has been signed by the Montreal Victoire of the Professional Women's Hockey League.
Deguire, a 27-year-old native of Sherbrooke, Que., played five seasons at McGill from 2016 to 2022, while earning a science degree (2020), followed by a master's in sports psychology. A four-time RSEQ conference all-star, the 5-foot-8 netminder was voted U SPORTS rookie of the year in 2016-17 and merited second-team All-Canadian honours in 2018-19. She attended Hockey Canada training camps in four of her five seasons at McGill and was one of three McGill players ever selected to play for Canada at the Nations Cup tournament in Germany.
In 154 McGill games overall, Deguire registered a 91-57-1 record with 30 shutouts, a stingy 1.90 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage. In regular season play, she saw duty in 84 of the team's 85 games played and had a 56-27 record with 15 shutouts, a 1.73 GAA and a .936 save percentage.
Deguire inked a standard player agreement in the wake of the Victoire placing goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens on long-term injured reserve retroactive to March 18. Desbiens suffered a lower-body injury during the Victoire's 3-2 shootout loss to the Boston Fleet on March 18. PWHL rules stipulate players on LTIR must miss a minimum of 21 days, which would coincidentally bring Desbiens to April 8 - the day before the start of the Women's World Championship in Czechia.
Deguire becomes the fourth McGillian to have signed a PWHL contract, joining current player
Jade Downie-Landry (New York), in addition to
Melodie Daoust and
Ann-Sophie Bettez, who both skated for the Victoire.
Montreal will play the New York Sirens on Tuesday (April 1) before breaking for the Worlds and will resume action April 26.
